ryujin, one would say, was different. weird even.

she was the only princess of the king, his only child being her older brother who was the heir to the throne. naturally, that put her in the place to get married off to one of the neighboring kingdoms in hopes of forming stronger alliances since that was what the princess was supposed to do.

but of course, ryujin never did what she was supposed to anyways, so why start now?

the thing about today was that she was woken up earlier than usual to get all dressed up for the prince of the kingdom's strongest ally. she kept a straight face the whole morning. one: she could not escape even though she desperately wanted to. and two: this dress was too tight.

"cheer up," chaeryoung, her best friend and lady in waiting said as her fingers weaved her hair up and out of her face. "you look beautiful in it."

it was pretty, she'd give it that. the dress had a billowing and flowy blue skirt that looked like dark water. she thought it looked like the ocean on a stormy night. if only it was loose at the waist.

"i can't breathe," ryujin choked, faking. chaeryoung sighed and patted her shoulder, feeling a little bad for her. she knew well how much she didn't like dressing up like this—ryujin never failed to voice anything she didn't like.

"sounds like a you problem."

her face felt heavier. rarely did she wear this much makeup to go meet someone. but when the prince walked through the doors to the throne, she saw why.

prince kang taehyun's beauty was well known everywhere. his presence alone, to many, was a blessing in itself. sure, he was handsome, but the knight at his side—he was the one that really caught her eye.

they all wore capes, the prince wearing a glorious deep blue one. she realized that they matched and her outfit was planned accordingly. prince kang taehyun was dashing, but that knight... she figured it was because the way his silver hair was in a perfect neat mess and his strong set eyes. was this just her natural will to do everything out of spite kicking in?

they greeted the king first before turning to her. she gave a curtsy.

"it's every pleasure to meet you, prince taehyun," she smiled politely. sure, she didn't really want to be here, but she wasn't about to be full out rude.

from his side, he could just tell she was weird, just like what everyone told him. while the knight next to him and the one ryujin was eyeing was busy thinking about what he was going to eat for dinner.

"as it is mine. but please, just call me taehyun."

his smile beat hers tenfold, she thought. but even so, for some reason, as they continued to talk about small things as they went into one of the castle parlors to sit, her eyes drifted to the man who stood behind him and to the side. the sheathed sword at his side glinted with the sunlight that filtered through the tall, large windows. and as the light hit his hair, it shined like it was glowing. sometimes, their eyes would meet. when they did, he quickly looked away. she wasn't as subtle as she thought she was.
