last year, midzy middle school.

ryujin isn't much of a good student, but she makes it a point to get to school on time. she can't stand study hall. but, she's usually the last to get there—right before the bell rings. so when she got into class that morning, most of her classmates were already sitting at their desks. a few weeks ago, no one would really pay much attention to her walking into the classroom, but that wasn't the case anymore. everyone eyed "discreetly" her as she went to her desk, noting what was on it. yesterday, it was rose and today it was—

"a sunflower?" she asked as she picked it up. "chae, what does it mean?"

chaeryoung, her desk partner and best friend didn't look up from her book as she answered.

"adoration, loyalty."

her face felt warm as she read the light yellow sticky note that came with it.

you're adorable, seriously. - s

it was then that she realized that people were looking at her.

"what are you guys looking at?!" she exclaimed, suddenly defensive and embarrassed. it didn't have the effect she wanted—which was what she was quite used to getting. the word "cute" was being whispered around.

who in the heck was trying to ruin her badass rep?!! she's supposed be the bad apple—the one you don't want to mess with because she won't hesitate to throw a punch. well, the fear that people used to feel was fading away ever since these flowers showed up.

nope—these don't affect her. she's cold. ruthless. a badass you know?

... yeah...

soobin sat in the front of the class next to his friend, taehyun—if it wasn't for him, he definitely wouldn't have sat there. but, he figured it was a good thing because he was forced to actually listen. he couldn't help but think she was cute when he caught sight of the light blush on his cheeks; quickly, he turned away so their eyes wouldn't meet, looking back to his desk and hiding a smile.

after class started and everyone settled down, being given time to work on the sheet the teacher handed out, taehyun asked:

"why don't you confess already? wouldn't that be easier?"

he wakes up early to do this for her without getting caught by anyone, and it's earlier than he had been used to. soobin values sleep—it's right next to food. the darkening circles under his eyes were evidence.

"what if she rejects me?" he replied, anxious at the thought. "...or beats me up?!"

okay, his crush is intimidating. and it definitely doesn't help that he's shy. but unlike what he thought to be a possible scenario, ryujin wouldn't beat him up. one: she doesn't beat up people who didn't do anything wrong—she rarely even fights anyway. and two:

maybe she likes him—and the flowers and notes affect her in a way she never expected them to.

class proceeded as normal as ever, soobin struggling to keep his eyes open and ryujin half dazing off. ryujin was distracted, her mind shifting away from the teacher to whoever was doing the whole flower thing.

and with all this mystery... it's driving her insane. yesterday she caught herself walking five blocks past her house because she was busy thinking. to be frank, she's had enough.

when the bell rang, she stood up first. it was a good thing that she sat on the corner, giving her a view of the whole class.

"who's been giving me the flowers?!" she announced, holding up the sunflower and carefully observing everyone's reaction. now who was going to be the suspi—

soobin flinched hard like an earthquake just came, trying to shrink himself so he wouldn't be seen—like it was working. ryujin didn't fail to notice and narrowed her eyes. the teacher just sat back—watched it happen. mr. kim thought this was as exciting as his history class could possibly get.

"choi soobin!"

he let out a scream and ran out the door fast as hell.

"and that's how we met," ryuhin finished.

when the new freshman they were touring the school with, shin yuna, asked them about their story after hearing that the unlikely couple met in middle school, she wasn't expecting a story like this. she was expecting the good guy patched her up after a fierce battle or something like that.

she wasn't disappointed though.

"i swear she was about to beat me up," soobin laughed when she punched his arm.

yuna smiled as she watched the two kind of forget she was still with them. but her own thought began to wander, her gaze on the sunflowers in the front of the school. and the boy who was coincidentally standing in front of them. when his eyes met hers, he smiled and waved.

love was as bright as sunflowers.
