-26- The dilapidated house
ZHAN'S POV
In the late afternoon Xinxin and I landed in Beijing. She was very excited again and was looking forward to seeing her dad Yibo again. But as soon as we sat in the cab, she fell asleep.
Had I known beforehand how far it was from the airport to the house of Yibo and his friends, I would have preferred to get a rental car. It would have been cheaper. Not that I'm worried about the money, but the trip had been really expensive.
When we finally arrived at the house after a drive of more than forty minutes, I made sure the driver was really at the right address. Because the house, as well as all the houses in the street, looked like it would give way and collapse at any moment.
Three times the cab driver confirmed that it was the right address and I lifted Xinxin out of the car while the cab driver took my suitcase out of the trunk.
With my daughter sleeping in my arms and my suitcase, I stood in front of this green door, the color of which was peeling off. I read the names on the mailbox and rang the bell. And while I was waiting for someone to open the door, I wondered if a safety helmet for Xinxin and me might be appropriate.
I waited and waited, but nobody came to the door. I rang the doorbell again and then rang it again, but no reaction. Stranded somewhere in the middle of nowhere, in an area that doesn't look safe, I waited for my boyfriend, who confirmed to me before that he would be at home.
Nervous and a bit frustrated I took my phone out of my jacket pocket and tried to call Yibo. Typical for my luck, his phone was off. Yeah, I'm being sarcastic. But who wouldn't be in this situation?
I angrily called a taxi company to order a cab. But they told me that no cabs go in this area. This asshole didn't care that I told him that I had just been dropped off by a cab there myself.
The only thing I could think of was to call Chuyue. One of my friends from back then, with whom I'm still in contact today. And luckily he was close by and could pick up Xinxin and me.
I tried again and again to reach Yibo, but without success. So I left a note on his door: "Unfortunately you were not there as promised. I' m with Xinxin staying at Chuyue for now."
Fifteen minutes later we arrived at the house of Chuyue and I could put my daughter to bed. She was so knocked out that she didn't notice anything around her. And I also needed sleep.
I tried again to reach Yibo, but again without success. So I put the phone on the bedside table next to the bed and lay down next to my daughter. It took me only a little moment to fall asleep deeply and firmly myself.
I woke up when someone kissed me on the cheek. I reluctantly opened my eyes and saw Yibo squatting beside the bed and stroking my cheek. "I'm sorry ZhanZhan. I wasn't at home because Wooseok got injured and I had to take him to the hospital and that's when I had to turn off my phone. I left a note on the door so you'd know where I was. But I guess that note wasn't there anymore. I'm sorry, ZhanZhan. Please don't be mad." He whispered.
"Mn. OK." I mumbled and closed my eyes again. I was so incredibly tired that I had trouble staying awake.
"ZhanZhan, please wake up. Let's go to my house. I've prepared a room for Xinxin." Whispered Yibo.
At that moment, Xinxin rubbed her eyes and cuddled her head on my chest. "Daddy? Where are we?" She muttered softly.
"Hey Xinxin my little princess. So, you're awake?" Asked Yibo.
Xinxin opened her eyes and looked directly at Yibo. "Dad?" She asked confusedly and then suddenly smiled when she realized who she was looking at. She reached out her arms to him and let him take her up into his arms.
"I missed you, Dad." She said, cuddling her head on his shoulder.
"Dad missed you, too. Really much. You and your daddy. What do you say we help your dad out of bed and then go back to my house?"
Yibo did not receive an answer, because Xinxin had fallen asleep again. I stretched and then sat up. I looked at the clock and was amazed, because when we arrived at Chuyue, it had been 5 pm, now it is 9 pm.
"How's your friend now?" I asked tired and rubbed my eyes.
"He is better. He broke his arm and will be in hospital tonight."
"Oh OK. I'm gonna go and freshen up and then we'll go."
"ZhanZhan?"
"Mn?"
"Give me a kiss first."
I gave Yibo a little peck and wanted to go to the bathroom. But Yibo held my hand and shook his head. He pulled me back to him and said, "That was not a kiss." He put his hand on the back of my head and then kissed me again for longer.
Half an hour later we were on our way to Yibo's dilapidated house. I had asked him if the house was safe because from the outside it did not look like it was safe. And Yibo told me that it was safe. They had probably done some work in the house and I didn't need to worry.
Back at the green door, from which the paint slowly flaked off, we went inside the house. Okay, it looked a lot better inside than it did outside. But it was still clearly visible that the condition of the house was anything but good.
Still I said nothing and pretended to be impressed. And now, somebody tell me I can't lie. I lied so much at that moment that I almost believed it myself.
Yibo's room and Xinxin's room are next to each other. Everything is at ground level and there is no second floor. He brought Xinxin into the room, put her in the bed with the pink sheets and the unicorns on it. Then he gave her another kiss on the forehead and let her sleep on in peace.
I followed Yibo to his room, a very tidy, clean room and changed my clothes first, under close observation of Yibo. I didn't mind that he was watching me, because there is nothing about me that he hasn't seen before.
Yibo would have loved to do more than just watch me and probably would have loved to help me undress. But he held himself back after I said that I would die of hunger soon.
Yibo took me by the hand and led me into the kitchen where a half-finished meal was ready. "I was cooking when Wooseok suddenly screamed. He probably fell in his bathroom and broke his arm. That's why nothing is ready now. I wanted to surprise you and Xinxin with dinner."
"It's OK. A bowl of rice is enough for now." I said that and I was glad my stomach didn't betray me. Today I'm good at lying. Sure, it's nothing to be proud of. But hey, I'm doing this to make Yibo happy. And they're just little white lies. But I promise not to make a habit of it.
