-Kate-
I see Davy take off running as I watch him leave the house. I can see the Sadie started running ahead of him and he's chasing after her. I can't tell if Davy likes her though. But still- Should I follow them? No. He's smart, he's not nine years old anymore. He's seventeen. But still- What if? I just don't know. I close the window and put my head in my hands. I lift my head. If I go now, I can still catch them. I'm out of the house in seconds.
I am across the street, but I'm panting. I walk through the bushes. Run, you fool. tell myself. But my legs won't cooperate. I force myself into a jog, it can't be more than five or ten minutes since they left. I step onto the beach to see them out in the water. I can see them talking and laughing. See, Kate, you overreacted. Feeling better, I turn to leave, but then I see Davy take a step closer to Sadie. They are inches from each other. Then, he moves so that their noses are touching. Then I see Sadie lean in. I just can't help it. My mouth moves before I can stop it,
"Davy?" I yell it more as a question than a demand. He turns, his face flushes, full of embarrassment. Sadie shoves him back, she's blushing and looks as confused as I am. At least she's wearing a one-piece, I think. "What are you-"
"Kate, calm down, it's not what it looks like." Davy says. I just can't believe him- I trusted him! And he goes off and starts kissing girls that he only just met. And runs off with an Anderson! Doesn't he remember what happened with me and Adam? does he care?
"We're going home Davy." I say, I am staring at Sadie though. Sadie's a nice girl, but I don't know if either of them were into what they were about to do. I know Davy doesn't have good friends. And Sadie, I don't really know. From what Davy has told me she doesn't have good friends either. Maybe they're just so desperate to have someone to be with. Davy glances between Sadie and I.
"But-" He starts but I cut him off.
"Now Davy." I say sternly, but my eyes pleading. Davy kicks the water, he waves goodbye to Sadie, I see him mouth "sorry" to her and he comes out of the water to me. Sadie has a blank stare on her face, like she has just seen a ghost and I feel bad. I put my arm around Davy when he comes out of the water, he shoves me off. I deserve it. We walk back to the house in silence.
We walk into the kitchen, the tension hasn't let up at all. Thank goodness that mom and dad aren't in town. "Sit down Davy, we need to talk," he rolls his eyes at me and shoots back,
"I'm dripping wet, do you really want mom's sofa all wet?" He's right, what can I say?
"Fine, don't sit then." At first, he looked plain scared and embarrassed at the beach, now I can tell he's fuming. He raises an eyebrow and crosses his arms across his chest. He rolls his eyes.
"Davy, don't do this."
"You were the one who wanted to talk, so talk!"
"You know I'm sorry. But you were about to kiss Sadie. You've known her, what? Two days maybe."
"We've been "friends" for years." He shoots back, he won't even look at me. "We just weren't close."
"And now you are?"
"I-" He's trying to explain himself. "I am old enough to hang out with who I want to, I'm freaking seventeen! And you go around sleeping with different guys all the time."
"We both know that isn't fair to me. And that I haven't dated anyone since Adam." He needs to understand that he can't do what he just did. "And if you're so sure, comparing yourself to me, why don't you just go pack your bag and sleep at her house!"
"Fine, I will!" He yells. I was freaking joking, idiot. But maybe he'll learn his lesson. He starts to the stairs.
"Davy, I was joking!" I yell up the stairs after him.
"I know, but maybe you shouldn't have f***ing said it them." He yells back. I shake my head. I made this so much worse. He is old enough to be smart, a kiss isn't that bad. But now he's going to sleep at her house! Great, just great! He comes back downstairs.
"Sadie said it's fine that I spend the night." He seems kinda dazed.
"You know I'm sorry, right?" I ask, I put a hand on his shoulder. "And you know it's a school night right?"
"Yes, I know, and I forgive you." He finally meets my eyes. He pulls me into a hug. I can trust him, I'll try at least. He's smart. He won't do anything stupid.
"Okay, just text me when you get to school tomorrow."
"Okay, I will." Then he leaves, and I think, would our parents kill me if they knew about this? I don't know how I feel about him staying at the Anderson's, but he clearly isn't changing his mind. I let out a sigh.
