-Sadie-

"Davy? Davy Cole?" Why's he here? What the.. "What are you doing here?"

"I was just about to ask you the same thing," He replies. "This is my secret spot, and I'd like to know how you found it." He says, knowing that I was oblivious to that fact.

"Oh, I thought I was the only one who knew about this place." I say. He has a smug grin on his face. As though he's enjoying this.

"Well I've been coming here for years, and-" He stops to think, "woulda been since I've lived here that I've been coming here."

"Oh," I say. He's starting to annoy me. "I've been coming here for years too and-" I pause. "Would you stop that?"

"Stop what?" He asks, just smiling bigger.

"Smiling like that!" I say, this dude... "It's annoying."

"Well I am an annoying person to some people, it might just be my nature," Davy says trying not to smile. "Depends who you ask," His smile is back. I roll my eyes.

"Oh, is that all?" I say, softening my tone. Davy's annoying, but somehow like me: Misunderstood.

"Actually, I've been coming here for-" He thinks, "well since I was five," he mumbles, "That's nine years."

"Oh," I say. "That's a long time."

"It is," He says. "Now would you stop saying that."

"Saying what?" I ask, laughing a little.

"Quit saying oh," He says, teasing me. He starts laughing.

"Oh," I say, then I start laughing too.

"You're funny," He says.

"That's a first," I say.

"I mean that.... I like your personality." He smiles. "You don't care what other people think and you have confidence, that's something I don't have." He laughs, almost at himself.

"Oh, I'm not confident, I'm the opposite of confident." I say, laughing as if it was a joke, me? Confident? Ha, that's funny. I'm so insecure, I never feel confidence. But if I come off as confident, I must be doing sOmeThIng right.

"How so," he asks, raising an eyebrow with genuine interest.

"You probably don't wanna hear it," I say not looking up. "My mind and life are complicated."

"Same," he says.

"Really?"

"Mhm, I'll listen." he sits down next to me on the sand.

"Okay," I say. I look at him and he's listening. I realize my music is still playing and I stop it. "I don't have any real friends, they are all pretty fake people, and I feel fake 90 percent of the time. Never have been good at making real friends, I guess if I fake it, I never have to really loose anyone. Even still, I'm always worried about what others think. I'm never confident as a result of that." I pause, "I prefer to be alone, I never cry, it's a waste of time and doesn't fix anything. But when I am alone, I beat myself down worse than others do. It's those stupid voices in our heads that tell us we're never enough. Anyway, that's why I come here." I look at him, "Sorry that was a lot. Once I start, I can't stop."

He smiles and says, "No, I get it." He looks at my ocean, "My friends are such idiots. I know there's no way it's the same type of confidence that I lack, but I'm never confident either. I just cover it up with jokes. So sometimes I come off as annoying or obnoxious, when really, I'm lonely. I'd rather be annoying than viewed as a that pathetic, insecure kid."

"Saaaaaammmee," I say. "I pretend I don't care, when really, all I do is care." He nods. And we sit in silence for awhile.

"Most I've the time I am angry or depressed or both." He finally says.

"I know right," I say. I check the time on my phone, it's seven.

"Got somewhere to be?" He asks.

"No, just checking the time, it's seven-ish." I say.

"Oh I see," He says. "I was kidding," he says, smiling. I look out at the ocean: the waves are bigger now, and the sun is shining and it's beginning to get warm out. There's a comfortable breeze blowing as well.

"I know," I say. I laugh a little.

"Sadie?" He asks.

"Mhm?"

"We relate to each other really well....and neither of us have good friends." He says.

"And..." I say. I raise an eyebrow, trying to be like him.

"We could be good friends."

"We could," I say. "Give me your phone."
