"I survived on scraps. Canned food, cockroaches, anything I could find. You know that rumor that Twinkies have an endless shelf life? Well, it's total bullshit." Five said telling Vanya and I about how he lived after the apocalypse.
"I can't even imagine." Vanya said. "You do whatever it takes to survive, or you die. So we adapted. Whatever the world threw at us, we found a way to overcome it."
"Hold up! Back up. I'm sorry did you say we?" I asked. When he said apocalypse I thought he meant nobody. I thought he was alone. Like me. And maybe I'm a little jealous.
"You got anything stronger?" He asked Vanya clearly trying to avoid the conversation. I just rolled my eyes.
Five seemed convinced that Vanya thought he was crazy and they got into a tiny argument but worked it out and Vanya even told us to sleep at her apartment.
"I'll take the chair you can have the couch and don't try to fight me on this Five I slept on leaves for years so I think I can sleep in a chair." I said thinking he would protest just like he did when we would have sleepovers as kids.
He didn't answer instead he pulled out a prosthetic eye. He then grabbed my wrist lightly and we walked out the door. I didn't ask questions cause I honestly didn't care. Who needs to sleep when you have eight day's to live anyway?
We walked to the academy because I guess he didn't really feel like talking to Vanya in the morning.
We went upstairs and I took off Five's necklace and put it in my memory box once again. And then I changed into some shorts and a t-shirt for bed. I laid in my old bed and stared at the ceiling. Eventually Five spatial jumped into my room.
"What can I do you for Five?" I asked sitting up as he sat on my bed next to me.
"Well I told you about my experience in the apocalypse so I wanted to know about the island."
I sighed thinking about that island that I called home for 16 years.
"Well the first day my powers wrecked the place from my breakdown but over time I had built shelter and grew a garden with my powers and found out how to live. I ate fish and vegetables and even bugs for 16 years which wasn't to bad just boring. And on top of that being alone and knowing my entire family abandoned me tore me apart."
Five looked at me the same way he did when I first left for that place. With sympathy.
"Eventually after you left and Ben died I became stable because there was nothing else that could make me have another breakdown. That and I destroyed Dad's transmitter. Once I was stable my powers got stronger and I gained control. When I learned I could use the air to fly and could go anywhere on the island with two stomps of my foot I was so happy with how I was progressing. And thought I could leave soon."
"From the sound of it it seems like you should have been able to leave cause you did what Dad brought you there to do." He said.
"Yeah so most would think but after every evaluation Dad still told me no and to practice more. Over time I gave up and faced the fact that, that was my life. But then Dad died and Pogo let me come home and here I am now in a bed, in a house, with a life that could have meaning."
Five looked at me smiling at my happiness of finally being free. I smiled back and we decided to lay down as we told each other stories of our adventures.
We both fell asleep while telling them. And when I woke up Five's arms were around me and I had my head on his chest. He looked peaceful sleeping but hey if I wanted a life and maybe possibly one with him I need to help him save to world.
