We raced across the country roads, wind and rain lashing against the windows of the car. I was so shocked that my best friend was part goat that I could barely think.

"Where are we going?" I asked coming out of my daze.

"It's a camp that's for kids like you two," replied Sally.

"The camp that you didn't want me to go?" Percy asked after a few seconds.

"Honey, please. This is the only way to keep you two safe," said Sally, the sadness clear in her voice.

"Just because an old lady cut some yarn." I said starting to get annoyed.

"Those weren't just any old ladies. They were the Fates. And the fact that they appeared in front of you? They only do that when you're, someone is about to die." Grover said nervously.

"You said 'you'!" I said, my emotions changing from annoyed to scared to terrified real fast.

"No, I said 'someone!'" Grover protested.

"No! You said 'you!' As in me and Percy!"

"Well yes, but-"

"Will you two stop! We're almost there! Just another mile. Please!" Sally said.

I still had no idea what was going on. And I didn't know where 'there' was. I started to think about Mrs. Dodds. Then it hit me. She wasn't human and she had meant to kill me! Before I could ask Grover about it there was a loud Boom! and a blinding flash of lightning.

We were flung into the air and had landed in a ditch.

"Ow..." I heard Percy mumble.

"Karlee! Percy! Are you all right?" asked Sally, examining the cut on my forehead.

"I'm fine," Percy mumbled.

"Grover!" I screamed, seeing my unconscious friend.

"Food," Grover mumbled. He was going to be fine.

"Percy! Karlee!" Yelled Sally. "Get out of the car and run! Run until you get to the big blue farmhouse in the valley! It's the border!"

"Okay! Mom, help me carry Grover! Karlee, get the door open!" Yelled Percy.

"Percy, honey. I can't go with you to camp. I'm not allowed!" Sally had a sad smile on her face.

"We'll go together!" I shouted "You can go with us until the property line. Plus, I'm not strong enough to help Percy carry Grover."

And with that, I got out of the car. Percy quickly followed after me, dragging Grover along.

Sally got out next, and she and Percy started to drag Grover in between them. I looked back and finally saw why we were running. I recognized it from the stories Mr. Brunner told us in Latin class. It was the Minotaur. Half-man, half-bull.

"Percy! Karlee!" Yelled Sally. "Once he sees us, he'll charge!"

Right on cue, he bellowed in rage and picked up the car and threw it. He smelled around, trying to find our scent. And once he did, he charged.

"Wait until the last second, and then jump aside." Directed Sally.

At the last possible moment, Sally screamed, "NOW!" And we all dove out of the way. I dove to one side with Percy and Grover, while Sally dove to the other. The Minotaur charged at me, Percy and Grover. We jumped to the side. It turned around and charged again. But this time, he was facing Sally. She tried to sidestep it, but he had learned his lesson. He reached out his hand and grabbed Sally by her neck. He lifted her in the air while she was kicking and punching his hand, trying to free herself.

"Mom!" Percy and I screamed. I didn't even think twice about calling her "Mom" since she was more like a mother to me than my mom ever was.

She caught our eyes and managed to choke out one word: "Go!"

With an angry roar, the Minotaur closed his fist around her neck. And just like that, the only person who was ever like a real mom to me was gone. Dissolving into golden dust.

"NO!" Percy and I screamed.

Suddenly anger replaced my fear. The Minotaur leaned over and smelled Grover like he was trying to figure out what it would be like to smash him into powder. Just like what he did with Sally. I couldn't let this big sack of beef get my best friend too.

"Hey!" I yelled. "Over here you big fat walking meatstick!"

Time seemed to slow down as it charged at us. I pulled Percy against the pine tree. We shared a look and we both knew the plan. At the last second instead of jumping to the side, we jumped straight up, kicked off his head, twisted in midair, and landed on his neck. Not a second later, he smashed into the tree.

The Minotaur tried to shake us off of him, but we just held onto his horns. Grover started to moan about food again. I was silently begging him to shut up! The Minotaur turned to face Grover and started to paw at the ground. I couldn't let him get Grover too. I looked over at Percy and understood the plan. We both grabbed one of his horns and pulled with all of our strength. Then with a loud snap, they broke off.

He screamed and flung us up. I smacked my head on the tree, but I brushed it off. He started to charge. I rolled and came up kneeling, just like Percy did across from me. As the Minotaur came barreling past, me and Percy shoved his horns just under his furry rib cage. And just like Mrs. Dodds, he burst into a fine, golden dust.

We ran over to Grover and picked him up. We dragged him over to the farmhouse and set him down on the porch. We then banged on the door. Just as the door opened, I collapsed next to Percy and Grover. Before I blacked out, I saw a familiar face of a bearded man and an unfamiliar blonde-haired girl.

They looked down at us and the blonde one said, "They're the ones. They must be!"

"Silence, Annabeth." Said the man in the familiar voice. "They're still conscious. Bring them inside."

I felt someone grab my arms and start to drag me. And that was when I blacked out.
