The storm had blown itself out by the following morning, though the ceiling in the Great Hall was still gloomy; heavy clouds of pewter gray swirled overhead as Harry, Ron, Bailey, Hermione and me examined our new course schedules at breakfast. Fred, George, and Lee were discussing magical methods of aging themselves and bluffing their way into the Triwizard Tournament.

"Today's not bad...outside all morning," said Ron, who was running his finger down the Monday column of his schedule. "Herbology with the Hufflepuffs and Care of Magical Creatures...damn it, we're still with the Slytherins..."

"Double Divination this afternoon," Harry groaned, looking down.

"I'm so glad that I dropped that," I said.

"What are you taking?" Bailey asked.

"I'm helping Poppy in the Hospital Wing during the Divination period."

"Lucky," Ron said.

"I know!"

"You should have given it up, shouldn't you?" said Hermione briskly, buttering herself some toast. "Then you'd be doing something sensible like Arithmancy."

"You're eating again, I notice," said Ron, watching Hermione adding liberal amounts of jam to her toast too.

"I've decided there are better ways of making a stand about elf rights," said Hermione haughtily.

"Yeah...and you were hungry," said Ron, grinning.

There was a sudden rustling noise above them, and a hundred owls came soaring through the open windows carrying the morning mail. Instinctively, I looked up, but there was no sign of Agnes among the mass of brown and gray. The owls circled the tables, looking for the people to whom their letters and packages were addressed. A large tawny owl soared down to Neville and deposited a large parcel into his lap. On the other side of the Hall Malfoy's eagle owl had landed on his shoulder, carrying what looked like his usual supply of sweets and cakes from home. I was surprised when a school owl dropped a letter on my plate. I opened it and saw it was from Dumbledore. It said:

Karlee,

Please come to my office after breakfast. As I heard from Chiron you wish to speak to me about your situation. I have informed Professor Sprout that you will miss class today.

Sincerely,

Professor Dumbledore

P.S.

I like Cauldron Cakes.

I looked up at him and saw him wink.

I made my way to Professor Dumbledore's office and said the password. I went up the spiral staircase and knocked on the door.

"Come in."

"Hello, Professor," I said, sitting down.

"Hello. Now Miss Black...I think I have an idea of what happens on a full moon, but please explain it in your own words." he said.

"Well...it's hard to explain...but it's basically like I'm stuck in the pre-transformation pain."

"Well...that does sound dreadful," he said. "But I think that I know a good way to aid in your transformations."

"OK. Well, anything that will help would be amazing." I said.

"If it is OK with you I would like to inform the other staff members of your condition. The ones that don't already know that is."
