I had never been part of a stranger group. Other than, you know, my friends. Crookshanks led the way down the stairs; Uncle Rem, Pettigrew, and Ron went next, looking like entrants in a six-legged race. Next came Professor Snape and Vega, drifting creepily along, their toes hitting each stair as they descended, held up by Snape's own wand, which was being pointed at them by Sirius. Harry and Hermione were next and Bailey and I brought up the rear.

Getting back into the tunnel was difficult. Uncle Rem, Pettigrew, and Ron had to turn sideways to manage it; Uncle Rem still had Pettigrew covered with his wand. I could see them edging awkwardly along the tunnel in single file. Crookshanks was still in the lead. Snape and Vega kept bumping their lolling heads on the low ceiling. I had the impression Siri was making no effort to prevent this. I heard Harry and Siri talking but I couldn't tell what he was saying. Once they finished their conversation no one spoke until we got out of the tunnel.

Crookshanks darted up first; he had evidently pressed his paw to the knot on the trunk, because Uncle Rem, Pettigrew, and Ron clambered upward without any sound of savaging branches.

Siri saw Snape and Vega up through the hole, then stood back for Harry, Bailey, me and Hermione to pass. At last, we were all out.

The grounds were very dark now; the only light came from the distant windows of the castle. Even the moon was covered. Without a word, we set off. Pettigrew was still wheezing and occasionally whimpering. My mind was buzzing. I was apart of a family that I didn't want anything to do with, my mother turned out to be my owl, and worst of all...I was related to Malfoy.

"One wrong move, Peter," said Uncle Rem threateningly ahead. His wand was still pointed sideways at Pettigrew's chest.

Silently we tramped through the grounds, the castle lights growing slowly larger. Snape and Vega were still drifting weirdly ahead of Siri, their chins bumping on their chests. And then-

A cloud shifted. There were suddenly dim shadows on the ground. Our party was bathed in moonlight.

Snape and Vega collided with Uncle Rem, Pettigrew, and Ron, who had stopped abruptly. Siri froze. He flung out one arm to make Harry and Hermione stop.

I could see Uncle Rem's silhouette. He had gone rigid. Then his limbs began to shake.

"Oh, my-" Bailey gasped. "He didn't take his potion tonight! He's not safe!"

"Run," Siri whispered. "Run. Now. "

But I couldn't run. Ron was chained to Pettigrew and Uncle Rem. I leapt forward but Siri caught me around the chest and threw me back.

"Leave it to me-RUN!"

There was a terrible snarling noise. Uncle Rem's head was lengthening. So was his body. His shoulders were hunching. Hair was sprouting visibly on his face and hands, which were curling into clawed paws. Crookshanks's hair was on end again; he was backing away-

As the werewolf reared, snapping its long jaws, Sirius disappeared from Harry's side. He had transformed. The enormous, bearlike dog bounded forward. As the werewolf wrenched itself free of the manacle binding it, the dog seized it about the neck and pulled it backward, away from Ron and Pettigrew. They were locked, jaw to jaw, claws ripping at each other. The werewolf manages to get past Siri and came at us. I stepped in front of Ron, Bailey, Harry and Mione holding my dagger. He slashed at me but I managed to block it. I fenced him off until Siri got back up. I did a good job of it. Until...he sank his teeth into my shoulder. I screamed. I fell to the ground and he slashed his claws across my chest. He was about to bite me again when Siri came and tackled him again. They rolled down the hill and out of sight.
