(PoV. Lily)
1 September 1975
„Yeah see you later, Remus." Lily, Emaline and Severus entered the compartment and Marlene moved over to the window to make room for them to sit.
„Tell me guys how does it feel to be a prefect now. Aren't you incredibly proud and so grateful to our beloved Headmaster Professor Dumbledore?", she said with a joking undertone.
„Well someones clearly feeling proud, right?" Lily looked at the boy sitting opposite her. He was forbiddingly handsome with his defined jaw and the turquoise eyes that peaked trough his messy curls. God the genetics of this family weren't fair.
„Yup, my dear brother has been talking about it all summer, haven't you Finnik? Head Boy, what a title", teased Marlene. He smiled at his sisters comment. „Yeah of course I'm happy about that, but mostly I'm just relieved that you little monster didn't become a prefect so I don't have to deal with you", he countered. Marlene kicked him in the leg and the compartment filled with laughter.
„Well it's been a while since someone from Slytherin became Head Boy, so I'm glad for sure", Severus said. „If it's someone from Rawenclaw in our seventh year than it'll surely be you!"
Emaline looked up from her book as she realized she was being addressed by Severus. „I'd have to get to seventh year for that", she sighted. „God not this again, I told you, we'd you help with your schoolwork, of course you'll pass", Lily protested. Emaline gave her a little smile and then turned back to her book.
„Have you heard who the new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher is?", Finnik asked.
„Why don't you enlighten us?"
„It's Professor Prigus, she used to teach at Durmstrang ", he explained.
„Well why'd she leave?" Severus asked. Finnik didn't know. „I wonder if she' do a lot of practical work."
Marlene looked exited. „Well, we could certainly use some. Everyone is better than Professor Glaunt, that was so freaking boring."
The rest of the way nobody talked much. They all seemed kind of tired, Severus and Marlene even slept a little and Emaline was reading her book, trying to understand some of the things they'd learn, beforehand. She had always been a slow learner, Lily thought. Even tho she wasn't dumb, she didn't have the natural talent to read something and understand it right away like Marlene and her brother had. Again, really unfair genes.
Lily got to know Finnik in her third year when she started being friends with Marlene. She had always been someone Lily noticed, but they never had occasion to talk because of their different houses and the fact that they didn't have any classes together until the third year. Gryffindor and Rawenclaw had History of Magic as a shared subject, which is probably the most boring class on earth, so there was plenty of time to bond. They had gotten close quickly and through Marlene Lily got to know Emaline. She was a shy kind of introverted girl, her dark brown hair was always up in some kind of braid or bun and she was not very tall. Because of that she always seemed like a Add-On for Marlene, even tho she always tried to include Emaline and to lift her up.
For Lily, Marlene was the most wonderful girl on the planet. She admired the way Marlene was able to light up a room with her laughter and how she always managed to be so spontaneous. This girl was fierce and had a lot of strong opinions which she didn't hesitate to share, which led to a lot of strict teachers disliking her. Lily had always wondered why Marlene hadn't ended up in Gryffindor, because she just felt like one, with her boots, her messy hair and her sassy comments.
At this point they had almost reached Hogsmeade and Lili woke them up to change into their Robes. Marlene groaned „I am so ready for my bed you don't even know." Finnik rolled his eyes. „You literally just slept."
„You can never sleep enough", she stated and smiled at his reaction. They quickly changed into their robes and and sat down to wait for the arrival.
Lily glanced in Severus' direction, having noticed her friend being tense. Coming back to Hogwarts probably made him feel anxious because he struggled with making close friends and questioned the friendships he did have.
That was partly her fault and, in a way, she felt bad about it, but she was scared that Severus would go down the wrong route. His new friends scared her, their beliefs went against everything their friendship was and she just couldn't understand how her Severus could enjoy the company of such cruel people. James and Sirius didn't help with their constant mean comments about his clothes and their stupid nickname for him.
Lily actually hoped that Severus and Finnik might become closer. He felt like a rock in the storm and Severus could certainly use that in the sea of bad energy that seemed to come with the Slytherin house.
Severus had once told her that she would never be never be alone at Hogwarts. She had been scared to not fit in at this magical school, in this magical world when she felt so ordinary. Severus never failed to make her feel special. As much as he was dependent on her now, she was dependent on him back then.
When they came to Hogwarts she made a lot of friends right away due to her openminded and kind nature. He was the exact opposite. It was hard for him to open up and he only made a handful of friends in his first years. So as Lily relied less on him for advice and friendship, he relied more and more on her. She was scared that, if she would pull away from him, he would get dependent on the wrong people.
Her best friend had always tended to fixate on things. People, Problems, Schoolwork, whatever he considered worthy of his time was getting his everything. In a sense Severus was an all or nothing kind of guy. This tendency made him incredibly interesting to talk to and really valuable as a friend. But it also made a really fragile, sometimes narrow minded and not very empathetic.
Lily was snatched back into reality by the sound of the train pulling into the station. It was just about sunset and the last rays of sunlight found their way through the crooked houses of Hogsmead. They waited for most of the students to leave so they didn't have to deal with the masses of people on the track.
When they stepped out of the compartment Lily saw Alice Droary and Frank Longbottom coming out of the one next to them. Alice blushed because she noticed Lilys eyes wandering down to her hand which Frank held. Lily smiled. It was about time those two got together.
They'd been dancing around each other since their first year but they seemed both really shy and awkward, so Lily figured that's why they had only gotten together now. She used to watch them in Herbology, just because it was really entertaining to see two people being so obviously in love with each other but not realizing it themselves.
Frank and Alice got out before them and proceeded to walk to the carriages. Severus got out right behind her and began to talk about their schedule which they received along with their booklists a few weeks prior. They had significantly less classes together than last year and Severus wondered why.
„I guess its because Gryffindor and Slytherin had a lot of classes together last year so they wanna change it up a notch. You know how well our houses work together."
Severus raised his eyebrows.
„Sarcasm Sev." Lily grinned. He was very intelligent in some ways but so slow in others.
„Yeah of course. But at least we work together."
