Chapter Four

I lean against the wall and pick up the phone. I look at my arm and dial the number slowly, but end up placing the phone back on the receiver. I do this numerous times; I just couldn’t bring myself to call Melody!

“Shawn, is that you?” A drained voice asks, yawning tiredly. I turn around and nod, seeing Pat rubbing at his eyes. “It’s 7 o’clock in the morning, what are you doing up?”

I shrug and he noticed my grip on the phone. He lets out a small laugh, “Trying to call Melody this early?”

I sigh, “More like dialing the number and hanging up.”

He nods and I follow him into the kitchen. He reaches in the cupboard for some coffee and begins to put some inside the coffee machine.

“I just don’t know what to say,” I admit, still wondering what I would even talk about.

He nods and gets two coffee mugs down. “Well you could ask her out somewhere?”

“That’s a great idea Pat!” I exclaim jumping out of my chair. “I think I’ll go call her right now!”

I feel a tug on my shirt and see Pat laughing at me. “You do realize she’s most likely asleep? It’s Saturday, no school.”

I fall back onto the stool, sighing loudly. “Oh right,”

He laughs at me again, handing me a cup and patting my shoulder. “Ask her to lunch. You could take her to that new Italian place and who knows, maybe I’ll be there.”

I roll my eyes at him, “Thanks Pat, but I think I can handle going on a date by myself.”

He chuckles and sat beside me, “Who said I was going to help you? I just want to try the food!”

I shake my head and sip on my coffee. I hope Melody would agree to coming to lunch with me.

Melody’s Point of View

“Well Silver, I think you’re a good influence on my daughter.” Dad shares with a smile. Mom nods and sits down. “I still don’t understand why your parents give you a phone though.”

She shrugs, “Mostly so they can call me at any time.”

Mom looks at Dad, “That would be a great idea.”

“We’ll talk about it after breakfast.” He replies, nodding at Mom.

The phone begins to ring and Mom stood up to go answer it. A smile lingers on her face as she motions for me to come over.

“It’s  Shawn!” She whispers with excitement. I nod and slowly took the phone from her.

“Hello?” I say into the receiver.

“Hello Melody! What are you doing?” Shawn replies quickly, sounding a bit uneasy.

“Just got done with breakfast.”

“Oh, well uhh would you like to go try that new Italian place?”

I giggle, “I’d love too. But Silver is with me.”

We sit in uncomfortable silence for a few seconds.

“Well, I could call Shane and see if he wanted to join us?” He asks with eagerness in his tone. I smile at the thought of him trying to figure out a plan just to see me.

“Sure that sounds great. Want to come get us around noon?”

I hear him let out a breath of air, “Yeah that will work. I’ll see you then?”

“Yes, buh bye Shawn.”

“Bye Melody.”

I put the phone back down and turn to see Mom waiting patiently for my news. I smile at her and told her what Shawn had said.

“Oh how exciting!” She squeals as she hugs me. Dad looks over at us from the table and shook his head.

“Girls..”

I roll my eyes and sit beside Silver, filling her in on today’s events.

Shawn’s Point of View

Shane and I walk up the steps of the house belonging to Melody’s parents. I glance over at Shane as I rang the doorbell a couple times, feeling a bit nervous. I am greeted with an older woman who is a lot shorter than me. Her hair is pulled into a ponytail and the smile she held on her face told me she knew exactly who I am.

“You must be Shawn!” She squeals with excitement as I turned to share a look with Shane. Silver and Melody appeared beside the woman with embarrassed facial expressions.

“Mom, please just stop. We’re going to leave now.” Melody softly says with an annoyed tone. Her mother shook her head and went to reach for my arm.

“Don’t be silly, I have the whole day planned out for all of you. Come let me show—“

Melody stepped in front of her before she could reach me. I let out a quiet sigh as Silver made her way toward Shane as she pulls Melody along too. “Goodbye Sandy.”

Melody’s mother, Sandy, sighed heavily before waving and closing the door. I smile at Melody and she sighs, “Sorry about that.”

I shrug as we walk across the yard to my car. Silver and Melody took the backseat as I got inside to the driver’s side.

I kept glancing in the review mirror, watching as a smile would spread onto Melody’s face each time I looked back.

Man, that girl is beginning to feel like a drug to me.

Melody’s Point of View

“Thank you, we’re all okay at the moment.” Silver responds to our waiter for the second time. He nods and turned to look in my direction.

“Would you like a refill on your Diet Coke?” He asked, inching closer as he waits for my answer. I shrug at him, “I’m okay, thanks.”

He nods before turning around to walk away. I saw Shane move closer to whisper something to Silver and she nods at him.

“So how is your Italian Pizza?” I wonder, gazing over at Shawn. He hasn’t said much today and I think it’s because of our male waiter.

“I like it. It’s much more different than American Pizza.” He responds softly, locking eyes with me for a few seconds. His features formed a small smile and I felt like melting inside. He opens his mouth to say something but quickly closes it and broke our eye contact.

“Excuse me miss, but I was curious if I could offer you any desserts?”

I shook my head silently and Shawn did something I would have never expected.

“Look pal, if you haven’t of noticed she isn’t interested in you! If I were you, I’d go grab our check and bring it back before I have to get up and kick your ass.”

The waiter nods before walking away and bringing back the check. He thanked us for coming after the two boys paid and we left.

“That guy was irritating.” Silver says with a sigh.

I nod and turn to notice Shawn walking toward a bench further down the street. Silver and Shane are engaged in conversation so I decided to follow Shawn.

“Hey,” I softly greet as I sit next to him.

He grins at me, “So I’m guessing I didn’t scare you off?”

“No, that guy was annoying me.” I honestly say with a giggle. He nods at me before staring back over at the other two, who were kissing now.

“They’ve taken a liking toward each other.”

I laugh, “Yeah, just a little too quickly.”

He shrugs, “So I was curious if you wanted to come over. I have band practice but it won’t take too long.”

I nod at him, “Sure. That sounds like fun.”
