A Few Months Prior
"Merry Christmas, guys!"
You pulled the tray of chocolate chip cookies out of the oven, shutting the door with your hip as Eevee and Pikachu ran around by your feet, both entranced by the delicious smell wafting through the air of your tiny apartment. Trying your best not to trip over them, you placed the cookie tray on the stovetop. Eevee jumped up onto the counter and reached for one, but you smacked his paw away lightly.
"Hey–not yet," you said, picking him up and giving him a hug. "We've gotta let them cool a little bit. But here," you put him down onto the floor, "we can make some hot chocolate to tide us over until they're ready."
Shuffling through the various items in the cabinet above your head, you pulled out a box of hot chocolate mix, only to be incredibly disappointed when you looked inside and saw that it was completely empty.
"Seriously?" You huffed. "If it's empty, throw it out and tell me. Then we wouldn't end up in situations like this." Pikachu looked up at you guiltily.
You put your hands on your hips and looked down at your two friends. "Well, what are we gonna do now? I guess...we could take a quick trip to the cafe while the cookies finish cooling. It's closed today, but I know where Kosho keeps the key."
Grabbing your backpack, you unzipped the main pocket and held it open. It was just a big enough bag for both Pokemon to squeeze inside. You didn't want to waste energy sending them back into your inventory just to bring them back out again when you got back, and you didn't trust either of them around the cookies to leave them in your apartment alone. With the bag slung over your shoulders, you left your building and started the short walk to your place of work.
Kosho always left a spare key underneath the carpet at the back of the building, and when you got there you found it with ease. You had told him multiple times that under the carpet was a stupid place to put a key–it was the first place most people would look–but for once you were glad for it. Once you slipped inside the building, you opened your bag to let your Pokemon friends stretch their legs before they had to hop back in for the trip back.
You were rummaging through the shelves looking for hot chocolate mix when you heard a loud crashing sound from outside the back of the building. Neither Pikachu nor Eevee were near you and you felt your heart leap into your throat with fear as you jogged toward the back door. In the doorframe, you could see the lid of a trash can that had rolled there, likely the source of the crash.
Maybe they're just playing, you thought, moving as cautiously as you could. You hoped that was the case, but you had a sneaking suspicion it was more serious than that.
When you poked your head outside, you saw Pikachu standing in a battle stance, staring off into the thick woods that started just at the end of the property. He growled, not taking his eyes away.
"Pikachu?" You asked. "Where's Eevee?"
As soon as you asked, you saw something move in front of the trees. A dark figure disappeared between the tree trunks and you could just make out the shape of a sack thrown over the figure's shoulder–a bag that was squirming and squealing.
No! You took off at a sprint, Pikachu at your heels. You wanted nothing more than to bring Eevee back into your inventory and away from whoever had kidnapped him, but there was nothing you could do if you couldn't physically see the little guy. You were barely thinking straight; all you knew was that you needed to get Eevee out of that bag first and then deal with the consequences and whoever had taken him after.
You ran for a good amount of time, and yet somehow the figure seemed to be getting farther and farther away. There were a couple of times you almost lost sight of them, but Pikachu seemed to know the way whenever you got lost and then you would see a flash of movement and be on the figure's trail again. Just when you began to feel a stitch in your side and thought you might fall over from running for so long, you began to hear something. It was a beat, almost like someone had turned up the bassline on an EDM song. Then, you emerged into a clearing.
