6: Secrets at the USJ

Looking back, the day had started off so nicely.

First, you had discovered there was a second box of cereal hiding behind the first which you had forgotten you had bought, so when all that came out of the first was a few crumbs, you actually still got to eat breakfast. Then, the train car you'd been in had been mostly empty and you'd managed to find a seat, which hardly ever happened. And finally, there was no massive crowd of reporters waiting to attack you right outside the school; the area by the gates was perfectly clear.

But then came Aizawa's announcement.

"Today's training will be a little different," he said. "You'll have three instructors: me, All Might, and another faculty member will be keeping tabs on you."

"Sir," said Sero–the boy with bulky elbows. "What kind of training is this?"

Aizawa held up a flashcard with the word 'RESCUE' on it. "Rescue. You'll be dealing with natural disasters. Shipwrecks, landslides, stuff like that."

If I die in a landslide today, Aizawa, I swear to God...

"Disasters, huh?" Kaminari grinned, putting his hands behind his head. "Sounds like we're in for a big workout."

"Real hero stuff," Kirishima held out his fist toward the blond and Kaminari bumped it. "This is what separates the men from the boys. I'm shaking with excitement!"

Tsu smiled happily. "Finally, I'll get to show off how good I am in water. Ribbit."

Aizawa held up his hand to call for silence. "Guys, I'm not finished yet. What you wear in this exercise is up to you. I know you're all excited about costumes, but keep in mind that you haven't gotten used to them yet, and they might limit your abilities. This special training is at an off-campus facility, so we'll be taking a bus to get there. That's all–start getting ready."

You, along with the majority of your classmates, decided to wear your hero costume. Being essentially a simple exercising outfit, it would be far more comfortable than just your PE uniform. Still, you saw Aizawa's point; people like Iida with his armor or Todoroki with that strange half-ice suit he had might have had a bit more difficulty moving around.

The only one who didn't end up wearing his costume was Midoriya, who blushed when Uraraka questioned him.

"You guys say it at the end of combat training," he said. "It was kinda trashed. I'm still waiting on the support company to fix it up."

A loud whistle cut through the air and you all looked over at Iida who was waving his arms wildly. He had been upgraded to your class representative thanks to his actions during the evacuation–something you hadn't seen because you were busy talking with Shinso Hitoshi. But apparently it had been quite the sight to see, as Midoriya had offered up his position to the blue haired boy.

"Gather around, class 1-A," Iida ordered. "Using your student numbers, for two neat lines so we can board the bus efficiently."

Well, he's certainly committed to the job, you thought. Maybe a little too much.

His commitment was definitely too much. When you all entered the bus and discovered that the layout of the inside was completely different to the plan Iida had constructed, he sat down dejectedly with his head in his hands. You thought about telling him that this would not stain his reputation as class rep, but thought it was better to leave him to work through it by himself.

You took a seat next to Uraraka and began chatting with her as you waited for the bus to leave. She told you her parents worked for a construction company and she was becoming a hero because she wanted to help them out. She didn't allude to money directly in her words, but you saw the way her face tightened when she started talking about it. If she had said something more, you would have assured her that you completely understood where she was coming from; there were days where you had only a couple hundred yen in your pocket. But she didn't, so you didn't.
