Regrettable choices are an inevitable part of life–a fact you were discovering first-hand as your legs began to burn from overuse.

You had only been crouching behind the bushes for about five minutes, but it turns out that was an incredibly uncomfortable position to be in. Silently chastising yourself for not choosing a better hiding spot (preferably one that allowed you to remain standing), you put all your weight on one leg in an effort to stretch out the other. It was a ridiculous stance, which made you all the more grateful that the only light on the empty street was a dim glow emitting from a streetlamp that desperately needed a bulb change.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

As quickly as possible, you slammed a hand over your cheap watch to silence its notification that it was now, in fact, midnight. That piercing sound had cut through the silent night air like a knife, but as you cut it off, another noise began to rise. From the depths of the gutter on the other side of the road came a hissing, low and constant. A Pokemon–just as you had been expecting.

To most, Pokemon were creatures to be feared, beasts who took no prisoners, acting only on instinct and who wouldn't hesitate to use their wide array of abilities to harm an innocent individual. Each one was to be considered a dangerous threat and a plague upon society. It was the only topic most politicians on the planet were able to agree on. You, however, did not agree. Pokemon weren't beasts, not even close. They were incredible and unique creatures with personalities and desires; more than merely animals. It was an uncommon worldview you held, one most likely influenced by your quirk.

In your world, 80% of the population carried a genetic mutation that gave them some sort of ability or inhuman trait. Some could move objects solely with their force of will, some could manipulate the elements, and some simply had an extra eye or two that slightly improved their vision. You, however, were given the ability to tame Pokemon. There were a number of faculties related to your quirk, including a sweet scent that was naturally emitted from your skin that drew them close to you, the ability to summon Pokeballs which could be used to store creatures you tamed, and a sort of inventory system within your mind in which you stored them. Then, you could call forth certain befriended Pokemon to fight against wild creatures, which could then in turn become your friends. To you, your quirk was a gift, something that allowed you to get a closer look at these marvelous animals. But to most anyone else, you would be seen as a monster yourself, for anyone who dared to treat Pokemon as anything but uncontrollable beasts must be a beast as well.

Luckily, you were not the only person who thought the creatures deserved more. Although underground, secret, and non-government approved, there were foundations that existed to rescue and rehabilitate wild Pokemon. The most well-known of these groups in Japan was the Pokemon Protection Agency, or the PPA. For years you had worked as a freelance agent for the PPA, who scoured Japan for anyone with a quirk and a mindset that would be suitable for their goals. It was the PPA who had sent you out that night and who were the reason you were crouching in the streetside bushes; they had heard reports of a massive purple snake-like creature that had been seen darting in and out of the sewer system on this side of town, and they wanted you there to check it out and possibly contain it.

"(L/n), do you copy?" From the back pocket of your jeans came the muffled monotone voice of your mentor. Keeping your eyes on the drain, you reached into your pocket and pulled out a red rectangular device–a handy tool called the Pokedex which allowed you to scan and categorize nearby Pokemon, as well as communicate with members of the PPA. On the screen now was a call sent from the man you looked up to the most.

You held the device up to your ear. "I copy, Aizawa. I think I heard it just a second ago. From the sound and the description you gave me, I'm thinking it's an Ekans. Shouldn't be too difficult to take care of as long as the coast is clear."
