"Mary! Mary!" I open my eyes to see Chase sitting next to me, happily shaking my shoulder. "Are we going to train?"
It takes me a second to realise where I am and what the ten year old is shouting about, before sitting up and rubbing me eyes. "Lets first get ready and eat some breakfast, afterwards we'll head off to the guild."
I haven't even finished speaking or the door opens, revealing Laxus. "I'll be leaving in thirty minutes, be ready be then." And the door falls shut again.
"You've heard him..." I mumble in a sour voice, he could've been more nice.
Chase and me quickly change and walk downstairs. I notice a fruit basket and turn to Laxus, who has been leaning against the counter with his eyes closed, probably listening to music through his headphones. "Laxus?"
No response.
"Laxus?!"
Again no response.
I walk over to tap his shoulder, but before I can even touch him he suddenly grabs my hand and grins. "What is it?"
I suppress the huge tendency to call him all negative names in my vocabulary, take a deep breath and point at the fruit basket. "Can we take some fruit for breakfast?"
"Was that all you were going to ask? I don't really care if you eat fruit for breakfast or not," he shrugs and lets go of my hand. "So go ahead."
"Thanks..." I mumble before taking the fruit basket. I hold it a little lower, so Chase can see what's in there. "Pick something for breakfast."
Chase quickly grabs an apple, and digs his teeth into it. I look at the basket myself and notice it's mostly apples, so I decide to take one of those too. There still a bit sour, but furthermore taste good.
"Lets go," Laxus suddenly says, as he walks out of the kitchen.
"Come on, Chase," I say, as I walk after him. I've decided to not hold his hand today. I hope he won't run off when seeing anything interesting in his eyes. It's not so far from here to the guild, and I certainly understand I can't always keep Chase close to me, especially now we've joined such a strong guild.
"Do you know that there's a contest in a week from now?" Laxus suddenly says. "It's the Miss Fairy Tail contest and the reward is 500.000 jewel."
500.000 jewel... That's certainly a lot of money. "Why do you inform me about this?" I ask him, confused. I try keeping my eyes on Chase in the meantime, though he's walking next to me. Chase's eyes go to everything, admiring it, but he doesn't walk over to my huge relief.
"I thought you might want to join, it would be interesting to see," he says with a smirk.
"I don't really have any fancy clothing, so I'd probably fail immediately," I tell him.
"I wouldn't mind paying for a dress, though I'd like some right of choice if I do," he smirks at me, which doesn't make it all too hard what kind of choice he'd like to make.
"I'll think about it." I probably won't. I don't want to embarrass myself in front of the entire guild, at least not in the first week after I've joined. I'd either stand there in my normal clothing, which is mostly baggy jeans and a shirt or hoodie, or it's a dress of Laxus's choice, and I can perfectly imagine how that would look like.
We walk into the guild, where Chase immediately runs off towards Natsu. I walk after him, to see how the two of them are already involved in a mock-fight, Natsu obviously holding back. "You'll watch him, right?" I ask Natsu.
He looks up at me, holding Chase with one hand to have a bit of time to respond. "Of course, leave it to me! I'll bring him back to you when we're finished with the training!"
"Thanks," I say. I doubt for a second if I should stay but after a reassuring smile of Lucy, I walk over to the bar to get a drink.
"Hey Mira, can I have some coffee?" I ask her.
"Of course," she says, before starting to make a cup of coffee. She puts it down in front of me with a smile. "So how was your first night in Magnolia? I hope it was a bit okay."
"I've always lived close to Magnolia so it wasn't much special honestly to be in the city... Though... It was quite a..." I search for the right word. How can I describe what happened with Laxus? I think special makes it sound too positive, and might give a very wrong impression, while weird makes it sound too negative and might insult him. "Peculiar evening... Though not all too negative," I try.
"What happened?" she asks, pointing her eyes directly at me. I think this is the first time I actually feel intimidated by the white-haired girl. Is it because of her own history with Laxus? Should I tell anyone, even though I'm not fully comfortable with it myself? At first I wouldn't mind to have told her, but suddenly all my courage has disappeared.
"E-ehm.... W-well..." My stuttering gets interrupted by a sudden arm around my shoulders. I jump a little and look to my left, to see the blonde-haired lightning mage, his headphones put down to rest on his neck.
"Oi, Mira. This is none of your business," he says, basically glaring at the other mage.
Oh, dear god. Let me disappear through the floor, find a tunnel, and be able to run our. But of course, this silent prayer isn't heard.
"I was just asking what made last evening positively peculiar, nothing more," Mira defends herself, as she starts to clean the counter, which was already clean.
Laxus scoffs and gets back up. "I'll be upstairs, get over there when you've finished the coffee."
"Wait, but-!" And he already walks off, putting the headphones back on his head. "I'm not allowed to go up there... Am I?"
"Basically it's only for S-class mages," Mira answers.
I nod, deciding I'll just stay downstairs. If he wants me to go somewhere only S-class mages are allowed to come, he should just get me.
An awkward silence falls between Mira and me, broken by Erza who suddenly sits down next to me. "Hey Mira, can I have some cake? Hey Mary, how do you like it in the guild so far? I hope Laxus didn't scare you all too much last night."
Mira puts down on a piece of cake in front of Erza, before walking to the back, which gains a worried look from the red-haired mage.
"I'm fine, I like it here," I quickly answer her question.
"Do you know what's wrong with Mira?" Erza asks. "She usually isn't this silent."
"She just had a very short discussion with Erza," I half-explain.
Erza nods, as to say she understands. I believe the entire guild knows about them having broken up, because no one seemed to be surprised when I thought they would end each other.
I wonder if they got together the same way Laxus and me did, or if Mira actually liked him when getting together. Either way, she seems really hurt and I'm very sorry for her. I wish I could just do something instead of sitting here, watching how Erza works down her cake.
