It took two days. Two days for them to notice that something was wrong. To realise Logan hadn't messaged them since Thursday. Since he had been acting strangely.
After, when it was all over, that was one of Virgil's biggest regrets. His biggest guilts. Not realising that something was wrong.
Patton first texted him on Saturday evening, while he was struggling through an English essay.
[Boyf]
[Boyf] Hey Virge. Have you heard from Logan recently?
[StressedandDepressed] not since thursday no. why
[Boyg] He hasn't been responding to his messages or answering his phone and we were supposed to meet up on Saturday but he didn't show. I'm worried about him
[StressedandDepressed] have you talked to his parents
[Boyf] Not yet. I was intending to go over to his place after I messaged you.
[StressedandDepressed] ok let me know whats up
[Boyf] Of course.
It wasn't until Sunday, at midday, that Patton texted him again. Virgil would remember that text, the fear that spread through him, the ice that froze him solid, spreading through his limbs and embedding a heavy weight in his chest.
[Boyf] Logan's missing. I talked to his parents. He didn't come home from the library yesterday.
It took two minutes for Virgil to leap out of bed, pull on his clothes and rush downstairs. In no time, him, Thomas and Remy had driven to Logan's house, where Patton and his parents where already there.
Thomas immediately went to talk to the adults and Virgil and Remy went and sat next to Patton, who was distraught. His usually beaming face was stony and creased with worry, his eyes ringed with red.
Virgil immediately wrapped him in a hug and rubbed circles on his back in the most soothing way he knew how. The smaller boy leaned into him and clung to his thin frame.
"What if something's happened to him?" Patton asked fearfully, his voice muffled by Virgil's hoodie.
"Don't think like that. He's fine. He'll be fine," Virgil said, although he wasn't convinced himself. His stomach was churning and that fear was still a dead weight in his chest, constantly dragging him down. The feeling was horrible familiar.
Logan's parents quickly explained the situation to them, talking fast as though to forget about what was going on. Logan had been acting strangely since Thursday; he had come home from school early, claiming to be ill and had stayed in his room without another word. He had barely eaten and kept glancing about him as though nervous about something. The next day, Saturday, he had gone to the library, which wasn't unusual for him.
Except that he hadn't returned home that night.
The police had been called and were looking for him, but so far there was no sign. The employees at the library said he was never even there so they had nothing to go on.
Virgil felt like breaking down, like crawling into a corner and not coming out until this nightmare was over. But as much as he wanted to, he couldn't. He had to stay strong. For himself. For Patton. For Logan.
Oh god, Logan.
Where are you?
————————————————————
It was dark. Too dark to make out many details. Logan's head was throbbing and his memory was fuzzy.
Where was he? What was going on?
He was sitting in a hard chair and it was cold. His hands were bound behind his back and there was something wet on his temple. The same place the pain was coming from. That pain was reverberating around his skull, chasing away coherent thought.
Was he concussed? No, that don't matter now. He should be trying to figure out where he was, how he had gotten here.
The texts. He remembered those threatening texts he had received, how scared he had been. He remembered leaving his house, heading to the library. The lurking feeling of being followed. The sudden pain. And then he was here. In a small room with no light tied to a chair.
And he was scared. He was so very scared.
