Virgil shuddered as the darkness descended around him like an impenetrable blanket.
He couldn't get enough air into his lungs. He felt like he was suffocating, trapped in this black prison. He opened his mouth and cried out, the sound seeming muffled and distance to his ears. He didn't know where he was anymore. Then he felt something. A weight. Hands on his shoulders. He heard a voice, the words distance but a voice none the less. It sounded familiar yet he couldn't put a face to it. He just focused on what it was saying. Breath.
He concentrated on taking deep lung fulls of air. Slowly the blackness faded, his vision clearing somewhat. The tightness around his throat was next to gone and he was aware of the wall, cold yet comforting pressing against his back.
How was he sitting up?
He shook his head. He could feel his heart hammering against his chest and his breathing still came in labourous pants yet he focused on what was going on around him. There was a figure crouching over him, one hand still resting on his shoulder. It was the boy from the library, his green eyes full of concern. He continued to mutter soothing words, waiting as Virgil slowly regained complete control over his breathing before he spoke.
"Are you alright?" He said softly, a hint of fear in his voice, "he didn't hurt you?"
Virgil could already feel the telltale throb of a bruise forming on his side but he shook his head. He could deal with it. He been inflicted with worse.
"Janus is gone," he said, "I took care of that. Do you think you can stand up?"
Janus. That must be the boy who knocked him down. Weird name.
Virgil nodded and began to pull himself to his feet, gritting his teeth to stifle a groan when pain lanced through his side. He hoped the boy wouldn't notice but no luck.
"You are hurt!" He exclaimed.
"I-it's n-nothing," Virgil mumbled, unaccustomed to someone caring so much.
"If it's nothing why are you wincing?"
Virgil couldn't think of a reply to that so he kept silent, his eyes downcast.
From the corner of his eyes he saw that the crowd of people who had stopped to watch starting to disperse. This made Virgil relax slightly; crowds always made him uneasy.
"I'm Roman, by the way," the boy said, clearly giving up on getting Virgil to admit he was hurt.
"V-Virgil..." Virgil said, risking a glance at Roman.
The taller boys eyes were still full of concern but he smiled as Virgil spoke."Nice to meet you Virgil," he said, "Although I wish it was under different circumstances,"
It was at that moment that the bell rang for the start of the next lesson, causing Virgil to jump violently once again
"Hey chill!" Roman said.
Virgil felt he cheeks redden. He glanced around and saw a blonde girl striding toward the two of them. Her makeup plastered face was set in determination, her hands clenched in fists at her side.
Roman sighed.
"Here we go," he muttered to himselfVirgil couldn't help but cower slightly under the girls steely gaze as she looked him over. She did nothing to try to hide the disgust and contempt in her eyes.
"Princey!" She exclaimed, completely ignoring Virgil after her original study of him. "What are you doing with...him?"
"Hello Eve," Roman said, smiling at the girl, who Virgil had decided was a modern day witch.
"Answer my question!"
"I was helping him. He-,"
Roman glanced at Virgil, who shook his head very slightly.
"-fell. He fell,"
"Well come on! We're late already!"
"Ok ok I'm coming!" Roman sighed.
He glanced once more at Virgil.
"Are you sure you're ok?" He asked again, his eyes serious."Of course he's ok!" The girl named Eve exclaimed. Roman ignored her.
Virgil nodded once more.
Roman returned the nod with a smile as he turned away.
Virgil watched the boy's retreating back.
He couldn't seem to tear himself away. Until the girl took his hand that is.
His stomach lurched and he turned and bolted into his class, already forming an excuse for why he was late in his head.I'm his haste he didn't notice that he didn't have his notebook with him.
