Caught

The sudden ringing of the bell jolted Virgil from his doze. He shook his head and grabbed the small grey bag Patton had lent him and made a bolt for the door. He had hoped to get away from the class without confrontation but, of course, he had no such luck.
He felt every muscle in his back tense as something knocked into him from behind. Keeping his head low he tried to keep walking when he was hit again, hard enough to send him stumbling forward. He continued to ignore whoever it was when he heard a familiar voice.

"Hey dumbass!"

Virgil internally groaned and sped up slightly, desperate to escape the situation that was bound to ensue. He suddenly felt a pull on his bag and realised someone was holding him back.

Virgil spun around, wrenching his bag from the boys fingers. It was Janus. Of course it was Janus. He glared daggers at him but didn't speak.

Janus looked around, a malicious grin spreading across his face.
"No one here to save you this time freak," he hissed.

The boy moved to punch Virgil in the stomach but this time Virgil was quicker. He lashed out with his foot, striking Janus where the sun don't shine and silently thanking his Doc Martins as the boy collapsed, letting out a cry of pain.

He wasted no time. Turning on his heel, he sped down the corridor weaving between the crowds of people heading to the main entrance, a grin steadily spreading across his face. He was going to pay for that later but it was totally worth it for the look of surprise and anger in Janus' face.

He slowed to a walk as he made it to the main entrance of the school where he spotted Patton and Logan. He made his way over to them, the grin still plastered on his face.

"Why are you so happy?" Logan asked suspiciously, not entirely trusting the look on Virgil's face.

"I kicked Janus in the balls. With my metal capped boots," Virgil chuckled as he said it.

"Virgil!"

"Whaaaat? I was saving the world from future baby dic- Janus's!"

The remark brought a small chuckle from Patton and an exasperated sigh form Logan.

"Why do I bother?" He muttered to himself, even as a small smile spread across his own face.

Virgil just shrugged as the three boys made their way out of the school, his shoulders hunching into their usual position as more people surrounded them.

-Time Skip-

Halfway back to Patton's house (he was insisting Virgil stayed with him for a few days) Virgil tensed suddenly and ducked into an alleyway, a look of pure terror in his eyes.

"Virgil? What is it?" Logan asked, panicked.

"M...my f...father..."

It made Logan uncharacteristically angry to see just how terrified Virgil was of his father, a man who was supposed to care for and love him.

He had pressed himself against the wall of the alley. His eyes were wild and his chest was moving at a rapid pace, his breathing laboured. Logan glanced out of the alley and saw who he assumed was Virgil's father. The man was glancing around with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. His hair and clothes were unkempt and he looked half asleep.

He ducked back out of sight and ran over to Virgil. He cupped his head in his hands, forcing him to look at him.

"It's ok, It's ok, he didn't see you, he can't hurt you," he murmured. "I need you to breath, ok? You're having a panic attack,"

Virgil nodded, eyes wide.

"Breath in, ok? Deep breaths,"

Virgil breathing slowed considerably as he copied Logan's breathing.

Just as Virgil was beginning to calm down Patton darted I've to them.

"He's coming over her!" He hissed.

Logan looked back at Virgil. He had paled considerably and his eyes were even wider than before.

"Shit," Logan muttered. He was becoming increasingly stressed. He had no idea how Virgil's father would react on seeing him and, frankly, he didn't want to find out.

His eyes darted frankly around the alley when the man walked by. He smiled maliciously on seeing Virgil. He reeked of alcohol and his words were heavily slurred.

"Well well, who do we have here,"
