Broken

It was halfway through Art when Virgil noticed the absence of his notebook. He had successfully managed to lose himself in the lesson, pulling on his black headphones and sketching for seemingly endless hours. He picked up his drawing and looked at it from a distance, surveying what he had done so far when he decided to grab the book.
The theme for the lesson was to draw an eye and Virgil had drawn something similar to what he had in Art, if on a smaller scale, in the notebook earlier that month.
He reached into his pocket and froze.

It wasn't there.

He turned and rummaged through his bag.

Nothing.

Virgil could feel himself beginning to panic so he forced himself to take deep breath. It probably fell out when he fell in the corridor. He could grab it before he went home. Simple.
He shook his head to clear it, earning him a strange, guarded look from the girl next to him, before starting to sketch again.

When the bell rang for the end of the day, Virgil was the first out of the door, frantically scanning the corridor looking for the familiar black leather bound notebook.
He couldn't see it.
As the hall filled with students on their way home it became pointless to continue searching. Dejected, he shouldered his bag and joined the crowd of students on their way to the door.

What a first day.

-Time Skip-

Virgil opened the door as slowly as physically possible and slipped inside. He glanced around the dark, barren hallway of his house and saw the fuzzy light of the television screen leaking from under the living room door.

Scampering over to the stairs he crept up with bated breath, every nerve in his body tensed like a coiled spring. He never knew what mood his father was in and it was safer to just avoid him. At all costs.

As soon as he made it to the relative safety of his room he flopped onto his small bed, pulled on his headphones and grabbed a piece of scrap paper and a pencil. He lay like that for 3 hours contentedly sketching but the worry over the notebook still lingered in the back of his mind, muffled behind blaring Panic! At The Disco lyrics, but there all the same.

It was at seven o'clock when Virgil heard his fathers faint yelling for him. Steeling himself he pulled off his headphones and opened his door, shoving aside stacks of paper to do so.

"Yes..?" He called down the stairs. hesitance lacing his voice.

"Get down here and make something to eat!" Came his fathers slurred reply.

He was drunk again. Great.

Virgil darted down the stairs and slunk into the kitchen, rummaging through the near bare fridge until he found a most likely out of date ready meal. Only one meal.
Virgil sighed and shoved it in the microwave. He could eat later.

After waiting the three minutes for the meal to heat up Virgil carried it cautiously into the living room where he father was grumbling impatiently. He didn't notice the empty beer bottle lying on its side just inside the door.

Before he knew what had happened Virgil was lying on the floor, his father looming above him. He looked around to see the bottle he had tripped over and the food all over the floor.

He started to tremble again, knowing what was coming.

"Fucking clumsy dumbass," his father growled, his cheeks coloured with anger.

Virgil scrambled to his feet.
"I-I'm sorry," he stuttered.

To anyone one else an apology would've sufficed but not to the man standing in front of him. He lashed out drunkenly, striking Virgil on the side of the head and sending him reeling backwards.

Virgil cried out, his head throbbing. Before his father had time to take another swing at him Virgil was already out of the room, staggering to the front door. He wrenched it open and fled, shaking and sobbing violently. He didn't stop running until he was gasping and felt as if he was going to collapse. He sat heavily on a bench, not trying to control his sobs or stopping to note where he was in the fading light  when he heard his name

"Virgil? Are you ok?"
