Sabrina practically dragged Connor out of Baxter High with Prudence, collecting the other Sisters before joining Ms. Wardwell, who led them down a long and twisted path through the forest.
Agatha broke the silence, "What if she's not at home?"
"She's always at home," Ms. Wardwell said, raising her voice slightly, "Isn't that right, Dezmelda?"
They were met with an elderly woman, deformities littering her face.
"We're witches, like you," Ms. Wardwell told the woman, "And seek counsel."
The witches sat on various stumps and logs, Connor electing to stand behind his sister.
"What made you run, Dezmelda," Sabrina asked, "From the Dark Lord?"
"I didn't run from the Dark Lord," Dezmelda clarified, "I ran from my High Priest."
Sabrina gave her a quizzical look.
"I was a child," Dezmelda began to explain, "We all were. All fourteen of us who took part in the lottery. Younger than you. No one questioned why that was. And I was selected to be Queen. And then..."
She trailed off and Ms. Wardwell continued her story, "Her High Priest had a revelation...delivered unto him by the Dark Lord, allegedly. The night before the feast the High Priest was to...initiate her."
Everyone shared a disgusted look.
"I was a child," Dezmelda repeated.
"Rather than allow herself to be violated, Dezmelda fled...into the woods," Ms. Wardwell continued, "She's lived here ever since."
"What happened then isn't what Father Blackwood is asking now," Prudence said to Sabrina.
"Just listen to your words," Sabrina insisted, "Father Blackwood is asking you to do this thing, not the Dark Lord."
"Father Blackwood is a righteous messenger," Prudence shot back.
"But he isn't divine," Sabrina argued back, "He's flesh and blood, just like you and me. Which means he has faults and he sins. He can be wrong, he can be corrupted."
"Are you suggesting Father Blackwood is acting on his own, independent of the Dark Lord," Prudence asked.
"I'm saying it's possible," She responded.
"But why? It's clear Dezmelda's High Priest had an agenda, but how could my death serve Father Blackwood," Prudence asked, "He's taken care of me, raised me, treated me like a daughter."
"Which makes what he'd doing even more insidious," Sabrina insisted.
