Chapter 18: Mystery

Hello! I'm back. 

First order of business - I'd like to thank everyone who left me an encouraging message on my last... chapter. As soon as I opened this up and saw all of them, I'm not gonna lie, you guys really made my day so thank you.

Xiao Zhan didn't say anything until they got home. He didn't look scared, he didn't look scarred but Wang Yibo could tell he was in shock. His expression was just too calm. Wang Yibo could almost feel the uncertainty, the trauma radiate off him. However, Wang Yibo couldn't help but feel that this was not the first time that Xiao Zhan had been in the presence of death. Only someone with experience or immense understanding could conceal the turmoil hidden inside this well.

'Sorry.' was the first thing that came out of Xiao Zhan's mouth as soon as they entered the house.

'Why?' Wang Yibo inquired. Why are you apologising?

'I endangered your life today.' Xiao Zhan explained. 'I won't hold you accountable if you don't allow me to stay here. In fact, I won't hold you accountable if you fire me here and now.'

Wang Yibo sighed, 'I don't blame you for what happened today.'

'Huh? Why not?' Xiao Zhan looked genuinely confused.

'From my understanding you were a frequent customer, were you not?'

'I was.' Xiao Zhan answered truthfully.

'I understand that you believed whole-heartedly that going there would be safe. Plus, without me there, the events that took place today, most likely wouldn't have occured.' Wang Yibo didn't want Xiao Zhan to walk away feeling guilty.

It took Xiao Zhan some time to process Yibo's words but after a few seconds, he responded with: 'Thank you.'

Wang Yibo smiled encouragingly before adding. 'I don't want to add anymore worry or guilt onto what must be a lot of emotional trauma right now, but you need to understand that if this situation were anything but a series of concurrences I would submit you to investigation and if found guilty, you would be made redundant.'

'And probably be thrown into prison.' Xiao Zhan deadpanned. Wang Yibo rolled his eyes.

'That depends on the severity of your crimes.'

Wang Yibo observed Xiao Zhan's behavior for the next few days and wasn't surprised to find out that Xiao Zhan could still function. It wasn't that he wasn't affected at all - no, Yibo could tell, Xiao Zhan was definitely experiencing aftershock - he was just surprisingly good at pretending he was ok.

Xiao Zhan acted almost as though nothing had happened, but it was the little things that caught Yibo's attention. He still tripped over that same same chair in the kitchen every morning, still wandered around the house muttering under his breath. He still laughed, still smiled, but the number of genuine smiles seemed to decrease and the saddest part was, there was nothing Wang Yibo could do without overstepping his bounds as an employer.

Wang Yibo didn't intend to avoid Xiao Zhan but he knew that it seemed very much like he was. He knew he couldn't do anything about that either but he wanted to. It's just, he couldn't neglect the events that happened that day. Someone was targeting him. Wang Yibo was being targeted and for the first time in what seemed like a very long time, he was not prepared. This meant he had no choice but to spend more time at work, less time around Xiao Zhan. Yibo had to prioritise work over relationship... not that he had any relationship in particular with anyone.

'Mr Li.' Wang Yibo called as he stepped into his office, 'I want you to contact the police. Ask them for all information regarding a man named Luo (Ahahaha I was panicking here cause I'm not Chinese but I gotta come up with a Chinese name) Xin (I searched up "Male Chinese names" lmao). I believe he was working with his mum and sister at a local restaurant about 20 kilometers west of here.' (Can anyone tell that I couldn't come up with a restaurant name? If someone suggests a good one maybe I'll edit this and put in your recommendation instead :))

This is a short chapter I think... (I'm not sure I can't remember how long the other Chapters were). 

I'm not going to lie, there will be other times where I disappear for a while because of low mood in general, but I genuinely like writing this... story so I'll definitely be back as soon as I feel I want to write.
