Luke's POV

I counted the hours, the minutes, the seconds until I'd get to see Alex again. At home, I tried to amuse myself by watching football, but it got tiresome and I watched Connor and Chelsea play instead. Connor was smiling evilly at Chelsea, "I know somethig yoouu don't."

Chelsea wailed, "Tell me! Tell me!"

"Lauren's sissy can't see! She's like those bats mommy read to us about!" Connor shouted to the world.

Wait...what?!? Alex was blind? Last time I checked Lauren only had one sister and that was Alex. Al;ex had promised me that she wouldn't lie to me about anything. That we'd be honest to one another, no matter what.

Blind.

Not being able to see.

How did I not notice it before?

She never looked at me, she was always with someone else.

Stupid.

I mentally smacked myself.

I checked the clock, 8:45 pm.

It was too late to go to the hospital, I'd have to go tomorrow.

Chelsea started singing, "Onlyy 4 more days till Christmaasss!"

I sighed, Christmas. Alex's Birthday, and the day of her father's death.

Her father's death due to my brother and my stupidity.

How would I ever make it up to her?

Running my hand through my hair, I thought for a moment.

Who knew her best?

Of course.

Jake.

I picked up my cell phone and scrolled through my contacts. "Jake the ass" was listed and I chuckled to myself.

I clicked the call button and put the phone to my ear. The phone rung once, twice, "Hello?"

A familiar voice picked up and I could imagine the snide smirk forming on his ugly ass face, "Hey ass, can I help you?"

"Hm, how'd you know it was me?" I chuckled.

"Lucky guess. Naw I lied, caller ID. Anyways, what do you need? Alex hasn't been hurt again, has she? Cause if I find out it was your fault I'm going to..."

He didn't get to finish because I cut him off, "Shut up! Nothing's wrong with her. I just wanted to know a bit more about her."

"Hmm, where do we start?"

"Hold on, let me grab a notebook."

I heard a scoff, "You're not seriously going to write down what I'm saying, are you?"

"I am," I said in a matter-of-fact tone and grabbed a notebook and a pen.

"Okay, so she likes smoothies, animals, harry potter, Jake..."

"Hey! Let's be serious here!" I scowled into the phone.

"Chill dude, I was kidding." Jake laughed nervously. "She's a complete sucker for sweets. Cakes, candies, chocolate, you name it!"

"I think that's all I need to know, thanks Jake."

"No prob dude, see ya around."

And with that Jake ended the call.

I turned off my phone and looked at Chelsea and Connor who were both on the ground sleeping.

Chuckling I went over and picked them up. Connor was flung on my left shoulder, Chelsea on my right. Boy! Were they getting heavy!

I put them on their beds gently and they did not awake. I turned off the lights and shut the door quietly behind me. I felt sorry for them, but at the same time they were lucky.

Sure, they were missing another older brother and a fatherly image in their life, but there were the pros too.

They were young, and they'd learn. They won't grow up alone. They'll have me and mom and that's it.

I went to my room and sat down on my bed.

And for the second night in the row, I didn't sleep.

Instead, I was planning Alex's birthday and Christmas present. The best one she'd ever get.

I left the house early the next morning. It was raining so I grabbed an umbrella and jogged in the rain.

I smiled as I entered the revolving doors.

The hospital was starting to put up Christmas decorations. It was still early to visit her, so I volunteered to help out and decorate.

Christmas was a happy time, most people would think. But when you looked at the waiting room, it wasn't that happy for others. They have to deal with sicknesses, broken bones, surgeries and sad souls.

I turned my gaze away and headed for Alex's room. I knocked gently on the door and saw Alex look up. She was with the little girl, Lily again.

Alex's POV

I woke up to hear the chattering of Lily to the nurse. She really was a sweet girl and I felt bad for her.

I sat up and rested my back against the wall.

"ALEX! YOU'RE AWAKE!" Lily tackled me.

"Aha, yes. How are you Lily?" I smiled genuinely.

"Goooooddd," Lily laughed. "Christmas is coming in 4 days Alex! And the nurse said she bought me a big gift!"

"Oh really?" I tried to sound happy for the little girl, but it really was hard when I knew her situation.

"Yup! Oh there's your guy!" I heard someone knock on the door and I smiled softly. Wow, these people really did make me smile. I never used to smile after Jake and after my dad's funeral.

Luke walked in and I felt Lily scoot over.

"Hey, let's go?" Luke asked.

"Yup, Lily you can come! The nurse said we can go out with a couple of the other children to the local winter fair."

"Yaay! My first fair!" I hear Lily squeal, and it warmed my heart to know that she was happy.

Luke kissed me on the lips which made me feel tingly all over.

"Let's go." I grinned and climbed out of my bed. I pulled on the hospital's marshmallow coat and slipped on the boots they gave me.

This was the start of a new era.

I could feel it.

Maybe my life was changing for the better.
