Waking up to her parent's yelling and the sudden urge to cover her mouth to what felt like thick smoke. She shot up from her bed, sat at the edge waiting for her eyes to focus before moving forward and as soon as it did, she glanced over at her clock which had a cloud of smoke hovering in front of it, she waved it away and realized why her parent's were yelling at 4 o'clock in the morning.
She slowly got out of bed and walked to her door reaching for the door knob. It was warmer. When she opened the door that was when she was faced with huge flames that not only flew itself into her room, but reached up to the ceilings in front of her parent's bedroom.
"Cassandra." Her dad's voice echoed throughout the house in fear.
Listening to her father's voice was all she was capable of doing since the smoke made it impossible to see what's where and it meant she had to walk towards the flames, but that didn't seem to stop her "Dad?" She called coughing through the smoke inhalation.
"Cassie." Her mom yelled. "Go outside." She ordered grabing her throat.
"Sweetie. Go now." Her dad demanded. "Don't worry about us. We'll be fine." He coughed heavily.
"Just always know, we love you" Her mom managed to choke out.
Doing as she was told, she quickly yet carefully ran out the front door and onto her front yawn. There she met up with firefighters, worrying neighbors, and a few police cars. An EMT worker ran towards her sat her on a gurney where she was able to be examined.
"I'm fine. I'm fine. Shecoughed. "My parents." She spoke. "P-please hel- help them. Th-they're inside." She stuttered anxiously watching the fire eat up her house.
Before anyone could be the hero of the day, the house collapsed inside.
"Mom. Dad." Cassandra cried jumping off the gurney and running towards the house, but was quickly restricted when a firefighter had grabbed and pulled herback. "No." She continued to cry trying to break free before fainting in the fire fighter's arms.
"Quickly we must bring her to the hospital for further observations." She heard the EMT worker say before fully knocking out. Once the firefighter put her on the stretcher. And with that they were off.
"You need to take him and go." A crying mother told her eldest son.
"W-what! I-I can't." The son stuttered anxiously staring at his mother's worry. "How am I supposed to raise a kid?"
"You're brother." The father corrected. "You have to." The father ordered.
"We'll just tell people your away at college and you took him with you because you'll miss each other." The mother thought fairly quickly on the spot.
The son's chest began to hyperventilate."What about you guys?" He asked.
"We'll make sure everything stays calm here!" The father began to sound anxious. "We'll contact you." He added handing his son a phone.
"Go." The mother said practically pushing them away. "Go now." The mother cried watching as the police were talking to the neighbors to see if they had witnessed anything,
"Ok." The son agreed. "Come on." The eldest son said pulling his little brother's hand walking in the opposite direction of the police and snaking through the crowd.
Meanwhile while in the hospital, Cassandra wakes up in a strange room she didn't quickly recognized.
"Oh, good. You're awake." The doctor smiled to Cassandra.
Cassandra being unsure of who she was and where she was asked, "Who are you? What happened?" She askedrubbing her hear in confusion.
"You've been admitted into the hospital and have been asleep for a couple hours now. I'm the nurse that's been checking up on you." She answered. "You fainted due to too much smoke inhalation and panic. A combination not great for growing girls." The doctor said cheerfully.
"Where are my parents?" The worried little girl asked more relieved once she knew where she was, yet still worried because she didn't know where her parents were.
"She can answer all your questions." The doctor said gesturing to a women in a business suit standing on the other side of the hospital bed. "Cassandra, this is Ms.Kylie, your social worker." The nurse introduced.
"Where are my parents?" Cassandra asked softly.
"Cassandra, may I call you Cassie?" Ms.Kylie asked followed by a nod. "Do you remember anything that happened?" She asked.
"Last thing I remember was my house collapsing with my parents still inside." She recalled before breaking out in tears.
"I'm so sorry." Ms.Kylie said softly consoling the crying child.
The doctor walked out of the room, right when a little boy walked in. "Cassie!" He exclaimed.
"Chrissy?" Cassie managed to look up, but still in tears.
"Heyy." He whined crossing his hands over his chest.
"I thought you could use a friend. And I found this little guy" Ms.Kylie winked. Cassie and Christopher both laughed.
"What happens now?" Cassie asked sniffling from her tears.
"Since you have no other family members who are able to raise you. First we wait until you're able to leave, then we will bring you to a place called an orphanage and there you'll be able to make friends and have a roof over your head until you get adopted. So basically you'll become part of a new family" Ms.Kylie explained.
"I'm scared." Cassandra muttered.
"Don't worry, I'm here. I'll help you get through it." Chris said supportingly, putting a smile on his best friend's face.
"How nice of you." Ms.Kylie winked at Chris making him slightly giggle.
~*~*~*~*~*
"Ok Cassandra. This is where you'll be living for a while."
"Right across from my house!" Chris mentioned pointing to his apartment building in the backseat of Ms.Kylie's car.
"Yeah. I thought it would be perfect." Ms.Kylie said turning to see Cassie's face growing a smile.
"Is this where I'll be living?" Cassandra asked, eyes turned the opposite direction and glued to the building across the street.
"Yup. And no worries, I'll be checking up on you every month." Ms.Kylie notified.
The building was a four story building, the outside was brick and the door was a black stained glass. The lawn was nice and green, with kids playing out front.
After have meeting all the kids and the person in charge, Cassandra had never felt like the odd one out until now. But she knew in order to get through things, she'll have to face the facts and make friends.
And of course with Cassandra's bubbly personality, it didn't take long for her to get adopted by a seemingly nice family. But how people show themselves to others, may be different from how they really are behind close doors.

I'm not a big fan of stories in third person, but I thought I'd give it a try. And to sum up my experience, It's challenging. I'm going back to first person in the next chapter!
Lemme know what you think? What's wrong with Cassie's new foster family?
