That night I couldn't sleep. My mom was working late again so I decided to go for a run to tire me out. It was dark out, a bit cooler then it was during the day making it easier to be outside. As I approached the pond like I normally did I realized I wasn't alone. There sitting on the bench I sat on practically daily was a girl. I'd seen her before or recognized her at least. Her long dark hair was tied up messily her thin arms hanging around the bench. She pulled something to her mouth as she changed positions sitting with her elbows on her knees kicking something on the ground. I didn't know much about her, I knew we went to the same school and had a class together last year. Come to think of it the one class we had together was the only time I'd ever seen her at school. Stuck in my own thoughts something broke the silence. "Can I help you?" she said not in an annoyed tone but a careless one. "No.." I said putting my hands in my pockets. "Alright" she responded and with that she faced the pond and took a drag from her joint. "Can I sit?" I asked, "it's a free country" she responded putting her joint out on the bench, probably to make it clear she didn't want me to sit close to her. She leaned back on the bench looking straight ahead never looking at me once. I didn't mind the silence, In fact the silence was kind of calming, it wasn't awkward it was just there.
