I knew I had struck a cord within Melody when I asked about her family. I felt bad, but I really didn't mean to get under her skin I was just trying to get to know her better. I have to approach this differently I thought as I waited by the pond the following night. If I make it more about the project and not just me asking questions about her life maybe she'll be more relaxed. She arrived later than usual, sitting without saying a word. "Look" I said trying to get her attention, "I didn't mean to offend you or to pry I just don't believe Miss Mallory will give me a passing grade if my whole perception project is about baking". She finally faced me and said "you didn't offend me, but fine I'll give you a wider variety of answers". "Great lets focus on today's question" I said. "How would you describe your childhood?" She read from the assignment sheet turning pale. To try to make her feel more at ease I went first, "my childhood was playful. My dad always invented games about life for us to play together. He said it would make me a more well rounded person" I said. "Like what?" She asked, "like studying expressions" I said. "Studying expressions?" She asked. "My dad always said it's better to know how someone is feeling and act accordingly rather than going into a situation blindly" I responded. "Anyways" I said after we sat in silence for a while, "what about your childhood?" I asked. "It was musical. My parents always played songs by bands they aspired to be like when I was young. They told me if they studied some artists enough they would become as successful as they were. So thats what we did. We listened to music together" she said. "That's nice" I responded, "I guess" she said after a while and that was it.
