The following night I waited for Melody by the pond so we could finish our project. I was saddened by the thought but hoped it wouldn't be the end. Melody arrived late she made her way to the bench and lit a joint the minute she sat down. I hadn't seen her smoke in the past couple of days. It made me feel as though she needed some illusion in this point in time to take her away from reality. She opened her notebook "what shapes who you are?" She read the question out loud clearly trying to hurry the process of our usual meet up. "Melody?" I asked trying to get her to face me "I asked you a question Kaiser" she responded angrily. I decided to answer before pushing any further. "My thoughts" I responded, "why?" She asked, "because my thoughts show me what I need to know and what I need to accomplish" I added. "Great" she said sarcastically after jotting down my answers and closing her notebook. "What's wrong Melody?" I asked, "Nothing Kaiser why would you think something is wrong? Because you want to analyze me? Because you think you know me?" She responded with every question getting increasingly angry. She stood up and took a hit of her joint relaxing a bit but I didn't wait any longer. I took her hand and whipped her around to face me standing up so we were just inches from each other. I immediately saw the bruise beneath her eye that she was clearly trying to hide with some cheap makeup. I looked her in her eyes and saw something in them that I hadn't seen before. Unlike the other times when I saw sadness I also saw strength. This time is a sadness but I saw something else, defeat. She didn't resist me holding her hand or push me away for standing too close to her. "We're not friends" she finally said, "I don't think we ever were" I answered and then I kissed her.
