The first time I ever heard you was in the backseat of my mother's car
listening to those old motown songs
your voice was unforgettable
and I didn't even know your name
I was too young
couldn't imagine who you were
until the day I saw you standing on that stage in black and white
during a time so far gone
you were still brand-new
still in your prime
and that was when I found out about you
Well I've heard about the rumors
and I know about the critics who
wanted to bring you down
and all the people you left behind
and how you went off on your own
after all the fame that you had started
seemed to fade out and you moved on
to carry on the legacy in front of you
still yet to offer the world all the force within you
thats how I found out about you
And all those days you spent
rising to prominence
you'd soon find yourself no
longer standing at the top
as the glory you had once acclaimed
only began to decline within the years
that came but still the world heralded you
as the best to ever dominate the musical industry and you were the one to continue
on even after you'd reach the peak of it all
and that's how I found about you
