How do you love someone who belongs in the sky? How do you admire someone who belongs in earth?
Well, as far as Thunderstorm knows, she's not sure.
Love has always been a sensitive topic amongst gods and goddesses. Some of them might chase after the pleasure of nightly needs every so and often, but none dared to delve into the topic of romance and relationships. It could be the lesson they were taught when they were mortals—love not when one's forever, look not when one is man—a story about a god falling in love with mortal women, and condemning himself to eternal torture for breaking the heart of many.
Thunderstorm is relatively old, even to the immortal realm. She is respected and feared amongst many. Not one time did the mortals forget her offerings and rituals—they were not strong enough to face her wrath.
But, even with all this power, she was alone.
Unlike the other goddesses, she had no maidens at her shrine. She did not have a handmaiden to serve her. Unlike the gods, she had no parties hosted in her name, where everyone drank and drank until they fell. She did not talk with others for morning tea or lunch; she came only when needed to and left when her responsibilities were finished.
A goddess of war is truly spectacular, indeed.
A battle where mortals left men to fight. A blood-soaked scene where no woman dared to interfere. Imagine their surprise when they realize the god they have been praying to for success was a woman. One that did not care about who lives or dies. Every mortal looked the same to her, and she paid no heed to those who opposed her.
Thunderstorm is a goddess by title, but she doesn't see herself as such. She would rather lay in the meadows, smelling the sweet nectar of summer. She preferred silence as much as other gods preferred sacrifices from their cities.
And who has a quieter realm than the god of death?
Death and war; war and death. They were inseparable, and not in name only. Those who fell in war would pass onto the underworld, awaiting judgement for their afterlives.
For many centuries has Quake looked after her.
Thunderstorm may not be acquainted in either side, but she was there to overlook all wars. A goddess in title only, with no cities in her name or allies by her side. She was truly alone. She had isolated herself from everybody else.
When the wars were finished, she would leave.
So Quake would await until the very last minute, just to watch her, then finally retreat back to his realm of the dead.
Oh, how he's fallen for someone who knows nothing of love. The god of death loving the goddess of war. Has he forgotten the old tales his mother used to tell him? Does he know no fear in love?
One day, he knelt to her, holding her hand like he was holding the most precious of jewels.
"My lady," he said, voice deep and raspy. His eyes were as dark as coal, but his touch was gentle like cotton. "I have fallen for you."
Thunderstorm did not react, but she pulled back her hand. "Gods cannot love each other," was all she said, and turned back to her small cottage, for she had no palace constructed in her name.
As she left the god of death, he said something that would make her turn her head. A vow that would never come to fruition. A promise that would never be fulfilled. I still will, he'd said, then returning to his own palace made of obsidian and stone.
Years have passed and wars stopped. As gods celebrated their peace, they did not invite Thunderstorm and Quake. There was no need for Thunderstorm to exist, for all she's worth was over and ceased. Quake was not welcome in the palace of gods, because all he brought was gloom and chaos.
For years Quake stood strong. Death and fear remained in mortals evermore. But as soon as peace reigned for long, he couldn't help but think of the goddess he once saw: where is she? Is she alright? He worried himself all night.
He waited for years, but he never saw her again. Until one day, she appeared before his throne. Dead and forgotten like every mortal, but the colour in her eyes still stood strong.
Why are you here? Quake had asked. He refused to believe his love had passed. You're one of the gods. You could not die.
That is once truth, but time will pass. Thunderstorm merely accepted the facts. What once was mighty will always fall. Have you not seen it, through millennia of war?
She meant all the leaders that always fall to their knees. The ones that are strong, their wills always ceased. She saw herself as one of their own, yet never looking at herself as a higher rank.
Quake could not interfere with the rules. He merely judged her actions as loose. He sentenced her to a forever paradise, but she shook her head and denied all of her prize.
I wish to be born as a human, she'd said. One that lives life peaceful 'til end.
She did not want rewards, nor did she want fame. All she wanted was a life of a game.
Then you'll return here, and be judged as a mortal.
For the first time she smiled, and said, Then let that be so. To me it's praise.
He watched as she returned to the realm of light, yet always watching her throughout her life. His behaviour was soon questioned by others, but they could interfere not, for he was a god.
His love never faded even as she left, so he approached her a time again. They fell in love as times began to pass, but soon she died as her time comes to pass. As she was presented before his throne again, she asked of the same thing she did the last she came.
Once again, the cycle continues without end. The ending's the same, but he'll do it again.
Isn't this the story they'd been told? A love, a romance that never comes to fold.

I wrote this with a tune of some medieval video game where its like bagpipes
so some of the stuff might rhyme
it's like storytelling but in the form of a song
