Just a Phase

"I didn't want to be an Alpha, Quake," Thunderstorm croaked, wiping tears from his eyes. "I never wanted to. So please, stop telling me I should shape up just because I'm an Alpha."

His body was trembling, his fists clenched, but not from anger, but from frustration. Frustration that he was always restricted by his biology. Frustration that he was always told to be someone he didn't want to be. He didn't want to be an Alpha, or act like one. All he wanted to do was be himself.

But that someone was a person that no one will accept.

This was Quake he was talking to, right? But why was he so scared? Why would he be terrified by telling this to someone he's known for years? The same Quake that's been with him through thick and thin, who stuck by his side when he was in the lowest of the low.

So why did he feel like the person in front of him was a complete stranger?

Quake's gaze was incomprehensible. Somewhere between disbelief and surprise, though they were painfully hidden behind a mask of forced calmness.

"What... are you saying?" he blurted, almost like an accusation or a scolding. "You're kidding, right?"

Thunderstorm's heart fell. He should have known. Out of everyone, he shouldn't have expected Quake to understand. Their leader who abided the rules to the core, never allowing any of them to step out of bounds.

He sighed. His shoulders sagged as he turned on his heel. "Never mind," he breathed, his nose sour from his breakdown. "We'll pretend this never happened."

Behind him, he heard Quake's answer. His heart turned to lead when he processed the words, his eyes squeezing shut to stop the tears from falling.

"You'll get over this phase. I know it."

Was it meant to be kind? Encouraging, perhaps? Maybe so.

But the only thing Thunderstorm felt was humiliation. His feelings were not validated here. Just like the society they stood for, their leader's view on such emotions would be the same.

Just a phase. Get over it.
