"A....ACHEW!" You sniffled, groaning while rolling around on your bed. It was the day after you and Toby had sprinted home in the rain from town. By the time you'd both made it back, you were soaked. Toby, somehow, managed to emerge dryer than you and as a result, wouldn't stop boasting about. His boasting, however, immediately stopped when you let loose a single sound. A sneeze.
You had insisted to Toby that it was nothing to worry about, that it was probably just the dust in the mansion. Oh how wrong you had been. Your whole body ached and burned with a fever, your head felt heavy and your nose was terribly blocked. To be honest, this was the most sick you'd been in a while.
The curtains in your room were drawn, obscuring the daylight that attempted to break through the barrier. You weren't sure what time it was and frankly, you didn't care. The only thing you wanted was an ice pack for your forehead, a hot bowl and soup and possibly a bath...if they even had one.
A small knock sounded on your door making you roll over and look in its direction, eyes droopy and heavy. "Hello?" You called, voice raspy and hoarse.
"Y/n? A-are y-you okay?" The voice called which you soon recognised was Toby. You groaned loudly in response, rubbing your eyes with your palms. Slowly, the door opened revealing a very worried looking Toby wearing a green hoodie and a pair of jeans.
"Oh m-my...Y/n, y-you l-look awful!" He gasped, kneeling next to your bed while placing his hand on your forehead, eyebrows furrowing as he felt your temperature.
"Well thanks! There goes my self esteem..." You grumbled, closing your eyes. Toby sighed, looking you up and down with a worried stare. He was right, you did look awful. Your hair was tousled in every direction, your skin was paler than its usual vibrant (s/c), you had deep bags under both of your eyes and your whole body shone with a thin layer of sweat.
"H-honestly Y/n, y-you know w-what I m-mean." He mumbled standing up and walking back to the door. "St-stay here w-while I get y-you s-some t-things. I'll b-be back s-soon." And with that, he left, closing the door behind him.
"It's not like I was going anywhere anyway." You muttered to yourself, slowly flipping over your pillow before nuzzling your face into the colder side. Swallowing dryly, you let your eyelids flutter shut, feeling your exhaustion consume you as you fell asleep once more.
When you woke up, the first thing you saw was Toby sat besides you on a chair. Once he saw you were awake, he smiled, reaching up to brush a few strands of hair from your forehead. "H-hey you." He whispered softly. You rolled on your side to get a better view of his face in the dimly lit room.
"Mph...how long was I asleep?" You asked, groggily rubbing one of your eyes.
"A-about t-two hours. I b-brought y-you a bowl o-of c-cold w-water a-and a cloth." He explained, rolling up his sleeves. You looked to the floor to see a large bowl filled with ice and water, next to that was a soft looking towelette. Using all of your effort, you began to reach off the bed for the cloth only for Toby to softly push you back.
"N-no uh uh. L-let me d-do I-it." He said, picking the cloth up and dipping it in the water.
"But-" You began to protest.
"Shhhh, j-just r-relax." He interrupted softly, wringing the cloth before dabbing it lightly across your forehead. You sighed, sinking further into the bed. The cold felt amazing against your burning skin, clearing up your head from its previously heavy state.
"Mmmm." You hummed. Toby smiled at you. Even while you were sick, you still managed to look beautiful to him. He removed the cloth causing you to whine at the lack of cold contact until he dipped it back in the bowl and placed it on your forehead once more.
After he'd done that, he stood up and walked to the door as you followed him with your eyes. "Where are you going now?" You questioned meekly, giving him wide, puppy dog eyes. He chuckled softly.
"T-to g-get you s-something to eat. D-don't w-worry I'll be b-back s-soon." He sent you a gently smile before leaving once more. You closed your eyes and furrowed your brow. How could you be so careless? You'd always been that person who got sick unreasonably easily so you should've known this would happen.
Toby clearly kept his promise as in under ten minutes, he had returned, holding a bowl of hot soup and a spoon. Steam rose off the liquid as Toby set the bowl on the chair he was previously sat on before making his way to the window.
You winced as he drew the curtains back, letting in the bright sunlight of the mid afternoon. "Ugghhh...why!" You groaned, pulling the covers over your head to shield your frail body from the light. Toby gently pulled the blanket off you, sitting you up right against a pillow before he placed the bowl in his lap.
You watched as he dipped the spoon into the vegetable filled liquid, lifting it to his mouth and blowing to gently to cool down before bringing the spoon you your lips. You gingerly opened your mouth as you let Toby spoon feed you. You hummed I'm satisfaction, the warm liquid burned as it went down your throat but it soothed you nonetheless.
"You're too kind to me Toby." You said, taking another spoonful in your mouth. He shook his head with a bashful smile.
"I-it's n-nothing Y/n. Y-you m-mean so much t-to m-me and this i-is j-just a small g-gesture. I'm sure y-you'd d-do the s-ame f-for me!" He grinned, setting the now empty bowl aside. You blushed at his comment, smiling back at him warmly only for Toby to frown.
You returned his frown and tilted your head to the side. "What?" His frown deepened as he lifted his hand to cup your cheek in his palm.
"Y-you're temperatures s-spiked a-again...I t-thought I-it was going d-down." He spoke, disappointment lacing his voice.
"No...erm. That's not from the fever it's..." You trailed off at the end, too embarrassed to fully admit. Toby blinked a few times before realising what you meant. His eyes widened momentarily before his lips curled up into a smug smirk.
"S-so, it's me t-that's m-making you hot...I-is it?" He questioned smugly, leaning closer towards you. You shook your head frantically and waved your hands around.
"N-no! That's not what I meant!" You stuttered making Toby's smirk widen.
"Stuttering Y/n? Y-you're beginning t-to s-sound like me." He winked, making your blush deepen.
"Shut it you!" You pouted, laying back down as you began to grow sleepy again. As Toby saw you yawn, he began to stand until you grabbed on to his wrist. "Could...do you think you could stay?" Toby sighed, looking down into your eyes that were almost begging him to stay. Caving in to your cuteness, he nodded.
"Of c-course." He whispered, waiting for you to scoot to the other side of the bed before he climbed in next to you. You inhaled deeply, catching a whiff of pine needles and nature. Trust Toby to smell of the outdoors. You thought, gazing into his deep, brown eyes.
"Toby?" You muttered, feeling your eyes grow heavy. He hummed in response, running his fingers softly through your hair as an arm snake around your waist. "Thank you...for everything." He smiled, watching as you peacefully drifted off in front of him. He gently pulled himself closer towards you, allowing you to nuzzle into his chest. He felt at peace, he always did when he was with you.
As he listening to your breathing steady, he felt himself begin to drift off as well. Sighing, he uttered a small 'you're welcome' before falling into a deep, dreamless sleep.
