After the news of Toby, Lyra and his mother spread throughout the neighbourhood like wildfire, people at school began to apologise and say how sorry the were to hear the news but you knew they didn't mean it. Practically the entire school didn't even know of Toby's existence until now. You were definitely his only friend. The fact that they talked about Toby like he was already dead made your blood boil and your anger sore through the roof. But since no word had come from his parents or the hospital he might as well have been dead.

When you were finally allowed to go visit Toby in the hospital you felt thrilled, nervous and guilty all at the same time. Before you went to Toby's hospital room you visited his mother who was let out early. Her injuries weren't severe as a result of the truck crashing into the drivers side of the car. Immediately, when you walked into her room she broke down into a fit of uncontrollable sobs. Her eyes were still puffy from crying earlier that same day and traces of dried tears stained her pale skin. Small droplets of tears were scattered closely together on the pale white hospital sheets. This situation must've been awfully distressing for her. The hospital room wasn't exactly the most calming place to be in, in her position anyway. The walls of the hospital were a sickly pale green and depressing pictures of different landscapes hung on the walls with dust collecting on their frames. When Connie was finally able to swallow back her tears she spoke to you in a shaky and crooked voice. "(Y/n)...Lyra she...she's gone...gone forever. When I woke up here I thought it was just a dream, a horrible nightmare even," she continued with her eyes cast down to her trembling hands. "But when the doctors let me see Toby I knew it was real," her gaze shifted towards your sad (e/c) eyes as a look of pure horror swept across her face. "Toby doesn't believe us...he thinks that we're lying about Lyra... please (y/n) talk to him. He'll believe you.. I know he will." Connie's eyes immediately became glossy as she finished pleading you. A tsunami of guilt washed over you at the idea of talking to Toby. It was unlikely that Toby had forgiven you for the previous events, but you couldn't bear to disappoint Connie. You lent forward slightly to wrap Connie in a gentle but comforting embrace. You could feel her shaking slightly as she began crying into your shoulder once again. "I'll try and talk to him." You finally said.

The door to Toby's hospital room stood tall in front of you. A deathly silence filled the atmosphere in the corridor as you stood there motionless in front of the pale door doubting wether or not this was a good idea. Your heart was beating so fast that you could hear the steady rhythm playing like a drum in your ear. The faint sound of a clock ticking could be heard from down the corridor, however in this silence it sounding as loud as a machine gun. The silence was agonising. You reached out a sweaty hand towards the handle of the door and immediately hesitated. I can do this...I need to do this. You repeated those words to yourself for what seemed like hours. Swallowing the lump that had gathered in your throat, you mustered up enough courage to place your hand on the door knob. The cold metal making contact with your trembling hand calmed you down only slightly. Taking one last shaky breath you pushed the door open. The eerie sound of a heart monitor beeped loudly filling up the silence as it mimicked Toby's heartbeat. Your (e/c) eyes immediately widened at the site of your best friend hooked up to many machines looking like he was at deaths door.

You were completely motionless. Toby was sat in the hospital bed with his head resting in both of his hands. It wasn't in a relaxing way though. A dark aura surrounded his body and his hair fell in front of his chocolate brown eyes casting a dark shadow across his face that made it seem like he was a being of pure darkness. As the door began to close behind you it made an eerie creaking noise that seemed to echoe throughout the room. One of Toby's arms was completely covered in bandages and a tube connected to a bag with clear liquid inside ran out of the other. The door behind you clicked as the lock was pushed into place. The small noise caused you to jump slightly as you weren't expecting any other noise to appear in the deathly silent room. Toby caught notice of the sudden movement and removed his head from his hands to face you. You were finally able to get a good look at your best friend. But it wasn't what you'd expected. Toby's usually joyful eyes were dull and lifeless almost as if his soul had been torn from his body. Scars that varied in sizes were dotted across Toby's face and neck and seemed to continue past his hospital gown. He stared at you intensely making you shift on your feet uncomfortably.

His gaze was unwavering and never left your eyes. His brows suddenly furrowed sharply turning his once soft gaze into an intense and terrifying stare. Many emotions were displayed on his face. Betrayal, hatred, disgust....sadness. Hesitantly, you took a single step forward towards Toby's bed. "Get away from me you monster." You immediately stopped dead in your tracks upon hearing those words leave Toby's mouth. "Do those words ring a bell to you (y/n)?" Toby questioned with venom lacing his every word. Your gaze immediately shifted to the floor and all you could do was mutter a small 'sorry'. I shouldn't have come here. This was the worst idea ever. You thought to yourself whilst keeping your gaze in the floor. You could feel Toby's stare burning holes into your skull from across the small room. You were brought back to your senses at the sound of hysterical laughter loudly bouncing off the walls of the room. Fear kept your eyes locked on the door and your head down as you didn't dare to look up. "(Y/n)~ why won't you look at me?" Toby questioned in a sing song voice. This time it was instinct that kept your gaze on the floor. "LOOK AT ME!" Toby suddenly shouted making your entire body jump and your head snap forward in alert. In front of you sat a broken image of your former best friend. A huge, insane grin was plastered across his face but his eyes held a look that was all to familiar to you. It was the same look he had when the encounter with Trevor had occurred. Slowly, you started to back away until your back was pressed tightly against the door. Toby, still grinning like a madman reached up to his left arm and started undoing his bandages revealing a huge gash that seemed to go all the way to his bone. The sight alone made your stomach churn as you struggled to keep yourself from vomiting. Upon seeing your reaction, Toby's Cheshire Cat like smile turned into a menacing scowl. "Pretty disgusting isn't it? Look what you did to me (Y/n)! ITS YOUR FAULT LYRAS DEAD!" His sudden change in tone made your legs and body began to tremble. The sight of you like this made Toby chuckle darkly. "Look at you. So weak and feeble." In that moment Toby's eyes were like pools of pure insanity infecting his gaze. "I wonder who the real monster is now?" Those words were the tipping point for you. Tears pricked the edge of your glossy (e/c) eyes and threatened to fall down your face onto the cold floor beneath you. With one swift movement you turned on your heel and sped out of the hospital not daring to look back.

The event at the hospital happened three weeks ago but you still couldn't get the image of your insane best friend out of your head.
