Gregor felt something.
It was a chilly evening and he and the team were growing closer to the Mountains of Moran.
Everyone had gathered around the campfire in a dark sprucewood forest. It seemed like everyone was in a good mood.
Gregor wasn't feeling it. He was feeling something else.
As he sat in the circle with the group, he stared out to the ever closer mountains while the others talked.
Then in an instant, as though it had never happened, a stirring ran through him, particularly through his heart. What the heck? was his first thought. And before he could think another, for the first time in his two lives, a clear thought came to him.
Jane.
...
"So are we supposed to check this out?" I asked, pointing to the trap door below us.
Jane glanced back at the fortress where Ben was still being held captive.
I looked at her distressed expression. "Don't worry, we'll save him," I reassured her.
Jane nodded nervously. Then she muttered something I couldn't hear. People often do that, for either two reasons: they have a speech disorder, or their mind is somewhere else. Assuming she aplied to the latter, I asked Jane what she had said.
"Sword," Jane repeated clearly.
Rax nodded. "None of you will be armored, but I have two extra irons on me."
He armed both Jane and me with iron swords before opening the trap door. Watson mewed loudly, as if to say it's about time.
The cat plunged in first, and we reluctantly followed.
We began down a vertical tunnel, me trailing in the last. I didn''t know if I liked that very much.
After a few moments, we felt the ground under our feet. We were in another tunnel, this time going forwards.
"So, uh, do you guys want to talk about anything?" I asked as we continued. Talking normally helped me feel better, as I was an extrovert, but Jane and Rax didn't seem t agreed.
"No," they both said at the same time. I decided that they were the kind of people that liked to be quiet under stressful situations. I definitly wasn't, so I hated only being able to hear silence as we continued down that tunnel.
The sound of nothing surrounded us for a few minutes until Rax signalled for us to halt. "Weapons at the ready. We're entering a room," he commanded. Rax had never seemed like the leadership type to me until that moment, when he raised his axe and led us into the chamber.
He, Jane, and I flooded into the room, turning our heads back and forth as we looked for enemies. Surprisingly, the room was empty except for a bottle lying in the middle of the floor.
"What's that?' I asked bluntly.
"Some potion or liquid," Jane answered, sheathing her sword on her back.
Making a stupid descision (I've been full of them lately), I walked over to the bottle and picked it up, tossing and turning it in my hands.
"Gosh, Ender, you're worse than Gregor," Jane sighed. "My Notch-" she cut herself off. Cursing with the name of the person who brought you back from the dead didn't seem right. I could tell. "Be careful," she muttered.
I peered closely at the light blue substance. It looked so familier, but as though I had never seen it before. Suddenly, as if someone had lit a torch in my mind, it came to me.
"ML Exma!" I exclaimed.
"Excuse me?" Jane asked, looking as though I'd gone insane. I'd forgotten that she wouldn't know what the substance was.
Rax slung his axe into the sheath on his shoulder and tentatively made his way to the center of the room. "Why is that here?"
"What is that, period?" Jane asked, joining to Rax and me.
"It's a liquid used by the Warriors of Notch, the people in that fortress," I told.
"The people keeping Ben hostage use that?" She asked, obviously not pleased. I didn't blame her.
"Yeah," Rax muttered, staring intensly at the bottle in my hand. "But why would it be here?"
I shrugged. "They do harvest it here." I searched my mind. Deep, vast mountains full of wild beasts and a secret organization lead by Notch, the man who's been gone for years. That's where we were. So why would their substance be here? They have their headquarters here, so they must also...
"I've got it!" I suddenly exclaimed.
"What?" Rax asked, looking more excited than I'd seen him.
"This- this is a secret lab."
