When Cap said bright and early, he wasn't kidding. He had JARVIS wake everyone up using a special alarm clock that wouldn't stop until you were out of your living quarters.
Hating the sound of the blaring alarm, it required you to work as quickly as possible. Even though you pulled an all-nighter, you weren't tired at all. Maybe it was your HYDRA experience, never being able to have time to sleep because you never knew when duty would call. Maybe it was the serum. Or maybe it was just adrenaline or nerves.
Maybe it was all three put together.
When you arrived in the lobby fully dressed and ready to go, so were the other Avengers, of course, but you were really the only one fully awake and alert. Except for maybe Tony, who never slept, and some other ex-HYDRA/Red Room people themselves.
You grabbed a protein bar off the counter and followed the rest of the Avengers into the quinjet. Every 'team' had to take different modes of transportation, as the quinjet was too small to hold all of the Avengers.
"It's a good thing everyone's out of here," Natasha mumbled.
No one answered back, but you all followed her gaze out the window.
Thousands of HYDRA agents, plus hundreds of Red Room assassins.
You looked back at Natasha, trying to read her emotions. As an ex-Red Room agent herself, it's hard to tell. But you were good at this thing, too.
There was something you hardly ever saw in an Avenger, much less Natasha Romanoff.
Fear.
Maybe she was worried that someone would get killed. Maybe she was worried that something would happen to her. The Red Room never let anyone escape their grasp. Even if someone slipped through their fingers, their past would still haunt them.
"It's going to be okay," you whispered, walking up next to her. You both were rocking the tight black suit, though yours covered your entire chest and left your arms bare.
Natasha looked down, slightly ashamed that you had seen that in her.
"I just don't want to lose anyone," she stated, sitting down.
"Neither do I," you said, biting your lip, but you didn't promise anything.
"Hey guys," Clint said, running up to you two. "We've landed, but HYDRA is ready to strike the minute (Y/N) doesn't get handed over."
"How are they set up?" you asked.
"They seem to have a command ship on the far end of the city, which is where Fedor and Madame B probably are. Everywhere else is just flocked with Agents. People with the really harmful guns are marked with a black suit, everyone else is in gray."
"Do we know where the core is?" you questioned, needing more information.
"In the middle of the city."
"Well," you said, standing up. "Everyone knows their assignments. Let us begin the fight. Tony, Steve," you said, "I'm gonna need some cover. Take me to the core."
They both nodded, surprised that they were going to work together for once.
"Let's do this."
Clint opened the door, Natasha, Bucky, and Wanda taking the lead. Wanda knocked HYDRA agents out of the way before they could fire anything, leading the charge while Bucky and Natasha followed.
Everyone else got out of their ships with weapons drawn. Gamora gave you an encouraging look, and you responded with a slight nod, her cue to go take the rest of the Guardians to do their job.
"Do you need me to fly you to the core?" Tony asked you. Everyone else had gone to their assignments; it was just your crew left at the landing spot.
You shook your head. "I'm going to need a lot of cover. If you see a HYDRA agent in a black suit, take them out first. They're armed with the most destructive weapons."
You, Tony, and Steve sprint as fast as you can to the core. The ground shakes, causing loose concrete from old buildings to crumble off.
"(Y/N), watch out!" Steve yells, grabbing you by the arm and pulling you close to him. He puts up his shield as some rubble fell down. If Steve hadn't grabbed you, you would have been smashed.
"Thanks," you said, but you didn't have much time to lose. Not only did it seem like their was an earthquake, but it didn't help that Steve continually had to swat bombs away with his shield and Tony had to blast at hiding HYDRA snipers.
"If those bombs keep going off, they'll cause the serum to explode. The whole United States could easily get blown up," Tony commented.
"I'm running as fast as I can!" you yell, shooting at a HYDRA agent that Steve missed.
As much as you hated what HYDRA did to you, it was helping. If you didn't have all the gross serums in your body, you wouldn't have made it this far.
And there it was.
A huge vibranium core, probably stolen from Wakanda by a smuggler, contained the smallest bit of the serum. The serum was acting like a toddler; it wouldn't stop moving and though it was small, it was mighty. Whatever HYDRA did to tweak the serum was going to work if you didn't stop it.
You knew what you had to do.
You were about to walk up to the core, but a voice in you comm link stopped you.
"Guys, neither Madame B nor Fedor Bram is here. We've checked everywhere," Natasha said. In the background, Bucky was cursing and you could hear the rumpling of papers. He must have really wanted to get them for good. Everyone did.
"Do you have any idea where they are?" Tony asked.
Your hands were shaking. This plan had to work. It was the only one you had.
"Well, Wanda sensed that they were here recently, so they aren't hiding in the middle of nowhere. My best guess is that they're headed your direction."
You paled. Both Tony and Steve looked at you, expecting you to respond.
You swallowed the lump down your throat. "Nat, Bucky, Wanda, keep looking around the area. I'd like to avoid meeting them or having them intrude. I have to get this job done."
You didn't wait to listen to their response. You walked straight up to the serum, it's power radiating off of itself.
