"Everywhere I looked, there were fins, and teeth, and blood. I knew if they saw me coming, I'd be next, so I just floated there, waiting, praying they'd swim on. But they didn't."
I fiddled with my fingers, bouncing my leg as I listened to a girl explain her near-death experience, and I've got plenty of those to tell.
"She's here. Maybe she changed her mind," Bellamy spoke to our group about Luna, causing my leg to stop bouncing. I watched as Clarke and Bellamy stood, walking toward Luna.
My eyes never left Luna as she stopped talking to Bellamy and Clarke and began walking toward Octavia, Jasper, and myself. The girl crouched in front of Octavia. "We need to talk."
"That's my cue," Jasper mumbled as he stood up with a small groan. I did the same, flicking a piece of hair from my face. My attention turned to Clarke and Bellamy, who were quietly talking to themselves.
°°°
"Jasper's actually smiling," I heard Bellamy comment. Octavia, Clarke, Bellamy, and me were all surrounding a small fire while Jasper was sitting all by his lonesome. Clarke and Bellamy filled the rest of us in that at first light, the boats will be back to take us back to the mainland. And that she still hasn't changed her mind about the Flame. "Clarke, let it go."
My attention turned to my sister, who was looking at Luna and another grounder. She's quite mad at Luna.
"We can't just leave," Clarke said.
"It's not like we have much of a choice," Octavia butted in, tossing something into the fire.
After a few seconds of silence, Clarke spoke again. "Maybe we do."
"What are you talking about?" I asked her, furrowing my eyebrows in confusion.
"I'm talking about putting this into her head without asking." Clarke held up the Flame to us.
"No way, Clarke," Octavia hissed, her eyes darting to Luna for a moment. "This isn't like Emerson, he was trying to kill us."
Clarke looked at the girl. "You think I don't know that?"
"Clarke, we don't have to do this," Bellamy explained. "We can fight, we can go back to Arkadia. We arm up."
"Fight who? It's an army of our own people... I don't like this any more than you do. But if Raven's right, then the code on this thing could stop Alie... Give me a better idea."
Octavia, Bellamy, and me exchanged looks until Bellamy spoke. "We'll stay here. It's the only way they'll leave you alone with her."
Clarke nodded. Just as she was about to stand, Octavia spoke. "Even Alie gives people a choice."
"We gave Luna a choice. She said no," I commented, causing Octavia to roll her eyes.
°°°
Clarke, Bellamy, Octavia, and me followed a grounder to the dock where we had first met Luna.
"Where's Jasper?" Bellamy asked when he realized Jasper isn't with us.
Octavia spoke. "Saying goodbye to his new friend."
We stopped in front of the crate we were in as two grounders opened the large doors. Three grounders walked out of it as Luna spoke. "Your gear. You get your weapons once you land."
One of the grounders shoved me toward the crate, causing me to glare at him as I stepped inside.
"The flame," Clarke said to Luna, who had taken the flame from her when she tried to forcefully put it in the grounder.
