Yoona was in front of the library again, sitting under the tree, their tree. Her feet tucked under her, she leaned forward, looking for him. Was he late? Or was she just way too early? She really didn't know. It's not like she had something to tell the time with. But she wasn't worried. He'd come. She knew he would.
They'd been seeing each other for, how long now? Maybe a year? A year of almost perfect bliss.
Almost.
Of course, there were complications. Like when he'd asked her why she had to leave for weeks at a time, and she couldn't answer. Like when he'd offered to take her home, and she had to decline, unable to tell him that she didn't have a home.
But he didn't press her for information. She could see in his eyes that he was confused, and maybe even worried about her, but he never pressed her for too much information. She could see in his eyes that he liked her enough to ignore her mysteries. And for that, she was grateful.
She hadn't seen him for a month. The last time, she'd been able to keep herself together for over a week. But it took a toll on her body, a big one. A lot of rest had been required to get herself back to "normal."
Still, she knew he'd be here. They always met in front of the library. He never ever missed one of their meetings.
"You're too pretty to be sitting here all alone," said a voice from behind her.
Yoona shot to her feet, turning around and throwing his arms around his neck. "I've missed you!"
Allen laughed, kissing her cheek. "I've missed you too," he said, cupping her face in his hands and staring at her happily, as though he could hardly believe she was real. He held out a tiny shopping bag to her. "Here, I brought you something."
She took the bag from him. "I didn't need a bag. But thank you. I will treasure it always."
His eyes told her that he was trying his best not to laugh. "Look in the bag, you idiot."
She glared at him. "I was just about to," she insisted, even though she hadn't been. She reached into the bag, pulling out a small box. The bag slipped out of her hands and fell to the floor. Allen caught it, his eyes never leaving her.
She opened the box.
"Oh!" she whispered, tears welling up in her eyes. It was a necklace. A beautiful necklace. White gold, with a little flower.
"Do you like it?" Allen asked, taking it from her.
"I love it," she said softly, trailing off. I love you, is what she really wanted to say. But she couldn't say those words to him. That would be too dangerous to the both of them.
She wouldn't let their hearts be broken like that.
Everyday, every time they met, she told herself that she should end their relationship. That it was unfair to him. She knew it would be the better, more noble thing to do. But forget noble. She liked him and wanted to be with him. It was selfish, she knew, but every time, she came up with reasons to let their relationship go on just a little longer.
Allen brushed strands of hair away from her neck. She lifted her hair into a ponytail and he put the necklace on her, his fingertips brushing against her skin, making her blush.
He hugged her, resting his chin on her shoulder. She smiled, leaning against him for a moment before turning around. She flipped her hair. "What do you think?"
"Beautiful," he whispered, but he wasn't looking at the necklace. He was looking at her. He took one step forward, then two.
Her eyes closed, and he rested his hands on her shoulders, leaning down, giving her the faintest whisper of a kiss.
"Yoona," he said softly. "I-"
"Stop," she whispered, her heart suddenly shattering. She almost gasped with the pain of it, her reality finally crashing down around her. She finally came to terms with it, but she was too late. She'd hurt him.
If she left now, if she left before he could say anything, then maybe he wouldn't be too heartbroken. Maybe it would be easier for him to start over.
"What's wrong?" he whispered, his thumb catching her first tear.
"I have to go," she said, crying in earnest now. She was shaking violently, but she took a step backwards, away from him. "Please, let me go. Don't stop me."
She tried to take another step backwards, and prepared herself to run, but he grabbed her hand, stopping her. He pulled her back towards him.
"No," he said gently. "Don't run away this time. I have something to tell you."
She buried her face in her hands. "Please," she whispered, sobs shaking her body. "Please stop. Don't say anything. Just leave and forget about me. Promise me you'll do that," she said, looking up. She held out her pinky.
He didn't take it. Instead, he cupped her face with his hands and smiled at her. "Yoona. I love you."
Something in her body, in her soul, clicked. She didn't have to look down to know that she was fading.
And this time, she would be gone forever.
He'd fulfilled her dream. She was free now.
Yoona placed a hand on his face, still crying. "I love you too," she whispered. "And I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," she said as she disappeared in front of his eyes, her soul finally going to heaven.
