Fuck. It sucked to see Carlos cry.

Not that it was obvious. The freckled cheeks were dry, but his eyes were not. They were foggy with little droplets hanging to his lashes, but not spilling over.

Carlos tried not to cry, Jay knew. Crying on the Isle never led to anything good.

But they're not on the Isle anymore. It's okay to put his arm around Carlos' shoulders and play with the hair at the nape of his neck.

"I didn't know..." His voice was shaky. Carlos swallowed and tried again. "I didn't know he couldn't have it."

"I know, C."

"I saw the chocolate on his lips. His mouth, jowl, whatever dogs have," Carlos blinked rapidly, "but I didn't think it was a big deal. He gets into food all of the time."

"Vet's gonna give him meds and hook him up to an IV and he'll be fine. Dude will be hogging your bed in no time."

Carlos gasped and turned to Jay. "He hasn't slept without me since we came to Auradon. They don't know what kind of bed he likes."

"They're gonna take good care of him here."

"No they won't!" Carlos stomped his foot on the ground. "He's my dog, he should be with me!"

Jay rubbed his boyfriend's shoulder. "Well we can't do that. Dude has to stay here."

"Then I'm not leaving." Carlos crumpled to the floor, leaning back against the wall and pouting.

"We can't sleep outside the animal hospital, man." Jay crouched down and poked a scrawny knee. "They won't let us stay."

"I don't care." Carlos looked up at him. "I'm not leaving Dude here by himself."

"Dude won't even know you're here!" Jay smacked a hand to his head and exhaled slowly. "Okay. You won't leave Dude alone, fine. Stay here."

Carlos watched in silence as Jay turned his back. Whatever, Jay could sleep in their comfy dorm room alone. Carlos was staying right here. He would stay in this spot until Dude was allowed to leave and come home with him and then Carlos was going to petition to have chocolate banned from the tourney field.

It wasn't Jay's fault, Carlos knew. Jay wouldn't waste a single bite of food, neither would Evie or Mal. He shouldn't expect Jay to stay here with him throughout the night. Jay had enough of sleeping on the ground for his whole life already.

Dude was Carlos'. He was the only person that should stay. It was his fault, he should have been watching Dude more carefully. Carlos would have stopped him from getting into the trash. He could have prevented this whole thing.

Even with his eyes closed, Carlos knew someone was near. He could hear the light footsteps. The person was deliberately trying to sneak up to him. They probably thought he was asleep.

"Get up, C."

Carlos finally opened his eyes. "Jay?"

"Come on." The older boy grabbed the front of Carlos' jacket and hauled him up. "Let's go."

"No, Jay! I told you, I'm-!"

"-Staying with Dude, I know." Jay groaned and tugged Carlos behind him. "Let's go see him."

Carlos followed, baffled. "What do you mean?"

"I pulled out the puppy eyes you always do with the secretary. And I kind of threw Ben's name around." Jay said over his shoulder, opening the doors of the animal hospital. "Women around here can't say no to some sniffling and the sad friends of the king."

"I don't do puppy eyes." Carlos indignantly huffed. A few veterinarians looked at them, but said nothing. "Where are we going?"

Jay didn't answer. He looked at the numbers on the doors and kept moving until he found one that pleased him. "Here we are." He opened the door quickly. "Go say hi."

"Dude!" Carlos ran forward and nearly collided with the table. "I've missed you!"

The dog raised his head and woofed softly. His tail wagged and his ears perked up, but he didn't move.

"I'm so sorry, buddy," Carlos whispered into the coarse fur. "I didn't know you had to go to the vet if you ate chocolate. I should have got you here sooner."

A gentle click interrupted the silence and cautious footsteps followed.

Carlos sniffled and looked to Jay. "How long can we stay?"

"The whole night." Jay shrugged off his jacket and tossed it on a chair. "We can't go bother other animals and we can't get in the way of the night staff though." He ruffled Dude's head. "Hey, little man. How about you just give me the chocolate next time, hmm?"

Dude wagged his tail.

Jay turned to sit, but Carlos caught his wrist.

"Thank you for this." He brought Jay's hand up to his mouth and kissed the dark knuckles. "You're the best."

"Yeah," Jay interlocked their fingers. "I know."
