Fitz's Pov
The last time I saw Biana this distraught was when Dad's mind was broken, she hasn't come out of her room in five days. She will only talk to the gnomes who bring her food up to her room. Sophie hasn't been much better though. I'm not exactly sure what to think of his death. I mean he died thinking that I hate him, I don't. I just get protective of my sister. It's hard to think that I interrupted their last moment together. Today is his planting. Even though he already has a tree, everyone thought that he deserves another. He did so much, and no one really appreciated him. He was always so caring, sensitive, smart, and so much more than just the child of a bad match!
"Fitz?" a soft voice calls snapping me out of my thoughts.
I glance up to see a blonde-haired, golden-eyed girl, "Sophie?"
Sophie walks over to me calmly and sits next to me on my bed far enough to rip a hole in my heart.
"Are you doing ok?" she asks.
"I don't know," I murmur, "I mean Biana just lost her boyfriend, I just lost my friend. He died thinking that I hated him."
Sophie's eyes fill with tears, "I miss him."
We sit in silence for a while, Tam walks in the room letting us know that we will be leaving for the planting in a few minutes. Sophie stands up about to leave, I grab her wrist before she takes a step.
"I-I need to ask you something," I start she nods, "What are we?"
She goes pale, "I d-don't know right now."
The words cut into my heart like a dagger, "What about you and Keefe?"
Her expression gets dreamy for a second before she snaps out of it, "I'm not sure."
"Well, you defiantly seemed sure when he was getting all lovey-dovey with my girlfriend these past few days," I mutter.
"Your girlfriend? Fitz! You make it sound like I'm your property like you own me! I am a person you know!" Sophie snaps, "And Keefe was not 'getting all lovey-dovey' with me as you put it, he was there for me when my best friend died! And that is much more than you can say."
"It's not my fault Dex died!" I yell, "I-if I could do what he did instead I would, I'm sure no one would miss me."
"Hey, guys? It's time to go-" Keefe pokes his head through the door to see us fuming at each other- "Sorry didn't know I was interrupting something."
"You didn't," Sophie says just as I say, "You did."
Sophie walks over to him and takes his hand, "Let's go."
Tam's Pov
Sophie and Keefe come out of Fitz's room holding hands followed by a very jealous, very mad looking Fitz. All of us are waiting in the common room, Lihn is next to Biana trying to comfort her sobbing form. You can tell that Biana is in total shock and disarray, all she is wearing is a simple green tunic with a few rhinestones on it, her hair was simply styled in a bun. She looks awful, she wasn't like Biana at all. In silence, Wylie and I stand up.
"I guess we will meet you there," I suggest.
Everyone nods needing to regroup before the proceedings. Wylie and I join hands and for some reason, I get a weird flutter in my stomach, WHAT IS THAT?! I think. When we reappear we are met by a familiar sign that reads, "All who wander are not lost". Surprisingly there is a huge crowd. I thought it would be smaller due to his parent's reputation as a "bad match". Although I guess that might have faded away once Dex joined team Valiant. The familiar auburn-haired family stands at the front of the line receiving everyone's condolences. Biana, Lihn, Marella, Fitz, Keefe, and Sophie glitter at the front of the gates. Sandor leads us to a secret path in order to skip the winding line.
"Thank you all for gathering here today," Councillor Oralie starts, "We are all here to mourn the devastating loss of Dexter Alvin Dizznee. He gave his life to save a friend. Mr. Dizznee was truly a talented young man, throughout his life he has been scorned, teased, bullied, though he still stayed strong. He was a brilliant technopath who created many inventions that still help us to this day. His loss will be felt by many people in the Lost Cities."
Councillor Bronte bends down to burry the seed wrapped in his hair. He then takes a vile and pours the liquid on the patch of dirt, the glass is smashed in the palm of his hand and sprinkled on top of the wet patch. A tree springs out of the ground with a twisted trunk, spikey red leaves, and periwinkle berries. It looks almost identical to his other wondering. I see Biana step up to where the Councillors.
Biana sniffles, "Dex, he was so much more than people saw. He was smart, talented, caring, funny, awkward, handsome, overlooked. I-I-I don't understand w-why people were so mean to him. All they saw was t-the son of a-a bad match. I was a real jerk to him our first and second year of Foxfire, just because he wasn't as important as me. That was a mistake. I wish that I c-co-could've spent more time with him. He was my boyfriend for a short amount of time. I wish we had more time..."
Fitz rushes up to her and brings her to us. She collapses in tears and shaky sobs. Sophie and Dex's family stand up to wrap this up.
"Dex was, no is family to us. No matter what people think, I know he is still with us, maybe not physically, but I can feel him. I have to believe that some part of him is still here," Sophie starts off with puffy red eyes.
"Thank you all for coming," Kesler concludes wrapping his wife and children into a hug.
The line starts moving up for people to give the family their condolences.
Lihn's Pov
Biana brushes past Fitz still mad at him for what happened before... before... Dex, and goes straight to me. I wrap her in a hug and Sophie joins, we whisper reassuring words, but nothing makes her feel better. After the planting, we all go back to the hideout, due to the threat that might still be at large. Biana runs up the stairs to her room, even with puffy red eyes, and no effort in her appearance she still manages to look flawless.
I look up, "Guys, I-I think we need to talk about what happened. You know to get some closure?"
Fitz sighs and surprisingly walks over to sit next to me instead of Sophie, my traitorous heart flutters, "You are right, I mean what more damage can talking about him do?"
"Remember how excited he got once he figured out how to make his twiggler search by keyword and erase the blackouts?" Sophie beams reliving the happy moment.
"Yeah, only Dex would shove sticks into a gadget," Keefe laughs.
Even though I wasn't there I still can picture the moment in my head.
"I remember when Sophie first enhanced him how concerned he would lose all of the ideas running through his head," I chime in.
"I remember how he never gave himself enough credit for all the things he built," Biana says reappearing and scaring us all, "Why did you guys decide to talk about Dex while I was gone?"
Sophie stands up, "Biana we, just wanted to make sure that you wouldn't-"
Biana holds her hand out to stop her, "It's alright, I know that I've been fragile lately, but I think I'm ready, to talk about him. He really deserved so much more."
The chocolate brown-haired girl starts to cry and Fitz walks over to her and pulls her in a hug, he whispers something into her ear and she nods. Biana wipes her tears from her face and goes to sit alone on a bean bag.
"So, what's our plan to find Jolie, Lady Gisela, and Brant?" she asks sounding more determined than ever.
