Chapter 10
~Maya Marlowe~
I loved witnessing Destani get passionate about the argument that we were just discussing. Callum was probably shocked at how she seemed to get angry at us but I knew she was directing it somewhere else.
"Calm down," Callum said. I saw Destani roll her eyes.
"I'm sorry but I'll defend my beliefs forever," Destani sighed."If you don't have things to believe in then that's an empty life. If you don't stand up for them, you'll end up falling for them."
"I understand," I said, smiling. We were still at the park, sitting on the jungle gym."See that's what I like about you."
Callum giggled before I realized what I just said, I blushed wildly. I could see through my peripheral vision that she was smiling at me as I looked down.
"You're so cute," Destani said.
"Thank you," I mumbled, she barely understood me. I didn't know the reason of how or why she makes me become embarrassed easier than Callum or my father.
She called me cute and that made my cheeks heat up even more. I wanted to repeat the word back to her but I couldn't muster up the courage to do so.
"You're really not going to say anything?" she asked with an amused tone to her voice. I didn't answer her, instead I pretended to play with my hands."I'm speaking to you, Maya." I didn't respond.
Destani grabbed my chin and turned my head to look right in her face. I froze under her gaze. Her touch created a tingly sensation that started on my face and spread to my whole body.
"Yo-You're c-cute too," I stammered, desperately searching for those simple words.
Destani giggled and released my chin, letting her hands drop to her side.
"You like girls?" Destani asked, with a smile playing at her full lips.
"Yeah," I said, avoiding that question she actually meant."I like everyone."
She rolled her eyes at me and opened her lips to say,"You know what I mean." She used a different tone of voice that sent shivers down my spine.
I bit my lip involuntarily. She looked down at my lips and she looked back up at my eyes. An emotion that I didn't recognize passed through her eyes.
"All of this sexual tension," Callum interrupted our little moment. Actually, I didn't even know what to call it but I liked it and I suddenly wished I hadn't brought along Callum.
"Whatever," I mumbled.
"Anyways..." Destani said."I'd like to take you guys places, to show how teenagers really live."
I looked up at her and said,"Destani, you do realize we do leave our homes every once and awhile, right. We actually do go to the dentist and doctors like other children."
"Yeah," Callum said."We go shopping and stuff like that. We are just completely sheltered."
"Oh," was a all Destani said, seeming surprised. I bet she felt as if she had been proven wrong.
"Destani, we aren't trying to call you dumb," I assured her."We just didn't tell you all the details."
"Details?" she asked.
"Yeah, extra stuff. Like we mostly eat healthy stuff, and we're homeschooled because our parents think other kids will corrupt us."
"No offense, but your parents are crazy," Destani said.
