I gathered up the box of firecrackers and rushed. Next, we were all fighting to burn crackers and as I had the box of crackers I had the privilege to go first. Although, I know that firecrackers cause a lot of pollution, but sometimes, if you are returning to your country after three years and have not had a proper 'Diwali', you cannot resist the idea of crackers, but being an environmentalist, I suggested everyone to burst only one cracker each. We followed the rules until mom called me in for some work and when I returned, I saw Darsh picking up the extra crackers and bursting them with a few poor kids. I don't know why? But I smiled at him and stared at him, my eyes wandered all over him, black kurta, black pants, hair gelled, and a very sweet smile. I found his nose a bit crooked, well he hated his nose, for a reason that was unknown, he thought his nose was not attractive; I found his eyes that were looking straight into mine.
Uh – Oh!! He spots me shamelessly checking him out.
I really believe I need mom's serious scolding, I have honestly forgotten my manners. I quickly turned away and thought for an excuse, as he made his way through the other kids towards me.
As I make 'my' way towards the gate of the garden, I hear his footsteps and minutes later; he clears his throat, very prominently, so that I make a note of his presence, and spoke, "Hi Kayna, just saw you around and I also waved at you, but you seemed lost." He said smirking.
Shitt!!! He did seem to notice me staring at him. Now, that you have put yourself into this situation, all by yourself, think Kayna!!! Think!!!
"Uh – I.... um..." Whoa!! Why am I stuttering? I don't even like him and what if I was staring at him? He is my friend. No, family, I can obviously stare at him for no reason.
"You seem to fall short of words", he spoke breaking my trance and his lips played his signature smirk. "Shut up!! I was just thinking to...." And then it just hit me. "Did you notice anyone getting into the room, I went to get all those firecrackers in?" I asked him. He seemed to be moved with my question.
Wait!! Did he see someone? Was that 'someone' dangerous?
"Come on tell me!!" I demanded, finding myself helpless of containing my curiosity. "Um.... N...No...Nobo...dy...why do you ask? Moreover, how would I know?".
Why do I feel there is something wrong with the way he answered?
Anyways I don't seem to be bothered much about it, because, I had better work to put my brains into and I had my webcams, so I could check. "No, nothing. I will check it on my own since I have secret web cameras planted all over the place" I spoke casually. "What???", he looked pale as he spoke.
What was his problem? "What 'what?'", I interrogated. "N...nothing", he stuttered like a six-year-old, who wasn't sure of the answer, he was being asked and believed that he could get caught anytime. You know, like we all reacted when asked tables after 15 in fourth grade. The same.
I thought he was uncomfortable to share the reason behind his paleness and I didn't push him, because that is what best friends do, they do not push you, but they expect you to be honest with them. For them, trust stands miles closer than secrets; they want you to trust them, telling them your secrets are your whole sole wish. They want you to feel, that your secrets are securely and safely preserved in their heart and that they wouldn't share it even until their last breath.
We talked for a little, ate sweets, and other snacks that my mother had prepared laboriously. Everyone loved my 'rangoli'. Even if it wasn't that beautiful, even if they faked their appreciation, I felt happy, because, let's face the truth; friends are the only human beings on earth that do not lie. They will be a hundred percent true to you if you like it or not. We finally bid everyone goodbye and lastly; I changed into my pajamas before hitting the bed.
