chapter 29

Elena's POV
    Bonnie and I finish up all of our calls to everyone when I look over to her and noticed the saddened look on her face. I cover hand hand with hers and give a small squeeze. She meets my eyes with her own teary ones. We don't say a word but rather hold each other as soft cries escape our lips. I can feel my throat begin to close up, but I managed to painfully begin to form words.

Elena:"you are so amazing Bonnie. I can't even begin to explain how much I love you for always being there and being the best friend I could ever have."

    She laughs and exhale softly while I myself pause to take a deep breath.

Elena:"Can you do me one last favor?"

Bonnie:"Of course, anything!!"

Elena:"Live everyday to the fullest. Spend everyday laughing and loving. I don't think I've ever seen you quite as happy as you have been with dam on, and boy let me tell you it's amazing."

Bonnie:"I will, and hey It's not goodbye forever. I'll see you soon."

Elena:"Not too soon, I hope."

    We both laugh and go in for a hug once more before heading back to the boys. As we walk into the living room we notice the boys are no longer there but in the kitchen instead already mixing things and pulling up pots and pans.

Elena:"Alright how can we help?"

Stefan:"We've got things covered in here. I don't want you to lift a finger. Even if it means risking Damon burning everything."

    He tells me as he turns to me and laughs softly. He kisses me and I hear Damon jokingly defend himself in the background. I smile into the kiss but immediately notice the glossy and slightly red look in Stefan's eyes. My heart swells and I swear I can almost feel it break little by little.

Elena:"At least let me set the table."

Bonnie:"Nope. They're right tonight is about you now go spend some time with your beautiful daughter and we'll be done soon."

Elena:"Okay."

    I kiss Stefan's cheek before turning and heading out of the kitchen. Although before I completely leave I turn one last time to get a look at everyone but notice the heavy feeling in the room as they all look at each other without noticing that I'd turned around.

    I walk up the stairs and through the hall looking at all the pictures that hold my memories with my friends and family over the years, but it doesn't take long to reach Lexi's room. I knock on her door and open it slightly as I call it her name so she knows it's me.

Elena:"Lex, it's me."

    She doesn't respond, but when I open the door further I see why.

Elena:"Well, I see Aunt Bonnie's taught you my favorite part about magic."

    I see the white feathers floating around her bed; taking me back to the moment Bonnie first showed me that she was a witch.

Lexi:"Yeah, she said it was the first thing she showed you when she discovered her magic."

Elena:"That's right, and if I remember correctly she showed me to help cheer me up."

    The feathers fall delicately onto her bed as she focus is on what I said rather than the spell. I step closer and sit on the bed next to her.

Lexi:"Cheer up?"

Elena:"Mm-hm. Your dad and I had just broken up an–"

Lexi:"Wait, what?"

    I laughed softly at her surprised tone.

Elena:"You see I was still human when we met, and I had to keep his vampirism a secret; just like everyone in our family has to keep your magic and Aunt Bonnie's a secret too, but at that time such a big secret was too big to keep so as much as I loved your dad I broke up with him. It was something I thought I had to do in the moment but I'm glad it didn't take long for me to realize I was wrong."

Lexi:"Why, mom?"

Elena:"Because, If I hadn't realized that I made a mistake then we never would have gotten back together; never would have had you; and we never would have gotten married."

    I can feel my eyes begin to water but I fight back the tears; knowing very well that my bright and beautiful daughter would instantly sense that something was wrong. A trait she got from Stefan.
    I smiled at her and noticed the feathers that had fallen found a place in her hair. Deadly I picked them out one by one while she giggled.

Lexi:"Mom?"

Elena:"Yeah?"

Lexi:"Do you think I'll ever find someone who loves me as much as dad loves you?"

Elena:"Of course you will,"

    I finish taking out all of the feathers in her hair and take her small hand in mine; both resting in-between us.

Elena:"You are incredibly smart and beautiful, and when the time is right you'll find that one special person who makes your heart flutter and your stomach feel like it's a knots."

Lexi:"Is that what love feels like, mom?"

Elena:"Well, it's different for everyone, but from what I can tell that's exactly what it is. It makes you nervous but in a good way. It takes you by surprise, but as scary as it might be it's wonderful and definitely worth it."

Lexi:"That's beautiful."

Elena:"It really is."

Bonnie's POV
    While the boys continue on making dinner, I take a step to the side to call Matt, Tyler, and Jeremy. Elena had been hesitant about calling them because she didn't want them to be involved and possibly be hurt, but they needed to be here.

    Tyler and Matt said they could be here before dinner. The only person left to call was Jeremy.

Jeremy:"Bonnie, hey."

Bonnie:"Hey, is Sarah with you?"

Jeremy:"Uh, no she's in the kitchen why what's up ?"

Bonnie:"Look, we're all meeting for dinner here, and Elena didn't want to get you involved because she wasn't sure if you were planning on telling Sarah about everything especially considering she hasn't met us and–"

Jeremy:"Hold on. Bonnie, slow down your rambling again. What do you mean Elena didn't want me involved? Involved in what?"

Bonnie:"It's a complicated and long story. I'll explain the details later, if you even want to hear them, but to put it shortly we're all saying goodbye tonight. To Elena."

Jeremy:"What the hell. What do you mean we're all saying goodbye Bonnie?"

    I could feel the restriction in my voice and the toughness in my throat.

Bonnie:"It's her last night Jeremy. I just wanted to call you. I know you'd want to say goodbye. Your her little brother. No matter how much she wants to protect you, deep down she wants you here with everyone else."

Jeremy:"I'll be there in an hour."
