chapter 34

Elena's Pov
    Stefan, Lexi, and I get into our car while Damon and Bonnie get into Matt's car with Tyler in the passenger seat. Bonnie's grams had left her her house in her will when she passed away, but she rarley used it. Although she and Damon had considered moving there after Stefan and I had moved back in with Lexi, they ended up staying. Which undoubtely was a blessing for both Stefan and I. Although Lexi was never a fussy baby, having a one year old with that much energy turned out to be more than a two person job.
    As we pulled up behind Matt into the driveway, I couldn't help but let my mind space out at least for a second or two until I heard my being opened by Stefan with Lexi's bag on his shoulder. After getting out of the car and getting Lexi out of the car we walked toward the house. My footsteps felt heavy, I dreaded the next moments to come; However I know, it's what I have to do and although I would be leaving my my family they had each other. Waking in everyone either sat or stood in the living room. They all turned as soon as the door open with red eyes or saddened looks.

Elena:"Hey everyone,"

Jenna:"You guys made it."

    Stefan simply nodded his head, and I hesitantly whispered a small yeah under my breath. Both Stefan and I knew there was no way we could put off telling Lexi any longer. Stefan squeezes my shoulder gently and then gets down to Lexi's eye level.

Stefan:"Hey sweet girl your mom and I have to talk to you about something."

Lexi:"You do? Did I do something wrong?"

Elena:"No baby. Here, let's sit down first?"

Lexi:"Okay,"

    We make our way to the love seat on the other side of the living room and Stefan sets the bags down by his feet and picks Lexi up to sit her on his lap.

Elena:"We just wanted you to know that we love you so much and we'd do anything for you, and that you'll always have your dad and all of your aunts and uncles by your side."

Lexi:"Okay, and you'll be with me too right mom?"

Elena:"Well, I will always be with you in your heart and memories, but sometimes things happen in life that don't let us be with each other physically."

Lexi:"What do you mean?"

I clear my throat and try my hardest to come up with a simple and vague answer that explains why I won't be there for the rest of her life without causing her too much pain; finally, I do only what I can in the moment and tell her the most important details.

Elena:"Lex, you know that you're a very special girl; but what we never told you is that you are from a doppelgänger bloodline. One day daddy will explain what that completely means, but in short that means that we have very special blood-"

    Through tears Lexi shakily looks down at her hands and tries to speak.

Lexi:"But why does that mean you have to leave?"

Elena:"Well, because our blood is so special it means that people will come looking for us to use it for certain magic related things; something your aunts Bonnie and Liv can help you understand when you're older. But the reason I won't be with you anymore is because someone really bad was trying to come get you, and I told them that I would go with them instead."

    I couldn't hide it from her. As much as I wanted to protect her from the truth, she needed to know why I wouldn't be around; why her mother would simply just be gone.
    I quickly wipe the single tear that had escaped from me and feel Lexi reach down to touch my hand.

Lexi:"But you'll come back, for us right? One day?"

    And as if my heart hadn't been breaking this entire time, that had done it. Hearing my sweet, beautiful, and innocent, little girl ask the heaviest question with the most amount of hope.
    I tried to speak but nothing would come out; luckily, Stefan–as always–read me in an instant and took over.
