Amanda Davis has not bothered me at all last year, but I guess she feels the need to fulfill her quest to ruin my life.
I'm being dramatic about it, yes. She only tripped me on the Hogswarts Express, and she did get reprimanded from it. Still, I can't help but think she's only just started.
Blair convinces me to push these thoughts away and focus on winning Evan's heart, even though it is not something I want to do. I find this amusing, so I go along with it.
Evan and I have visited some over the summer, but not as much as I would have preferred. That's why I'm excited to see him this year.
I can't find him on the train, so I sit with my other friends, disappointed.
Evan is in the Great Hall, sitting at the Slytherin table like normal. I scarf down my food hurriedly so I can follow him when he finishes.
"Slow down, Arabelle," Cynthia warns. "Usually, I'm the one inhaling my plate."
She notices my eyes flicker to Evan and she leans back and crosses her arms with a teasing smile. "Nevermind, I see you've got business to attend to."
I flash her a glare. "I just wanted to talk to him about something."
"Since when do you ever want to talk to anyone about anything?"
My mouth parts in surprise and I stare at Cynthia. "That's not true! I always talk to people."
Cynthia, fortunately, lets me go follow Evan when he finishes his food.
We don't speak at first, so I take this time to notice his growth through the summer. He's taller than me now and his face is a lot more grim than I am accustomed to.
He breaks the silence. "I'm sorry I didn't visit more often."
"Ah, you were busy," I answer. "You don't have to apologize for that."
More silence.
"I can't believe you're taller than me now," I say, mainly to break the awkward silence. "It's not fair, is it?"
His lips tug upwards in a smirk. "We both knew this day would come."
I roll my eyes, but I'm glad the tension is gone. "Do you think we'll get the same classes, again?"
"Of course we will. My father doesn't pay extra for nothing."
I stare at him, open-mouthed. "Your dad pays extra for that?"
He pays my back. "Only joking. The Heads of Houses already know they'll be sacked if we aren't together. Just sucks you weren't in Slytherin instead of that old bird house."
"I don't have the qualities of a Slytherin," I protest, ignoring his mild threat to the teachers.
Evan eyes me. "What qualities?"
"Leadership, quick thinking, loyalty," I list off the qualities that really make a good Slytherin. Evan softens.
"You are loyal, and very resourceful. You could be a leader if you wanted to, and I see how clever and sly you can be. You wait on the side for everything to play out in your favor, because you are the one controlling it."
I smile at the odd compliments. "Thank you."
"You know, Ravenclaws and Slytherins aren't really different. Ravenclaws are clever and quick witted like us." I see him grin out of the corner of my eye.
"Don't let Cynthia hear you say that," I quip.
"Hello, Evan," I hear a female's voice as Amanda passes by us. I recognize that Dolores girl walking with her. They flutter their eyelashes at Evan.
I glower at them and Dolores lets out a sharp laugh. "Sorry, Arabelle, we must have forgotten your clear attraction for Evan."
"Don't deny it," Amanda adds when I open my mouth to protest. "You fancy him. Don't you?"
"Of course not, don't be ridiculous," I snap, cheeks reddening.
"Then why hang out with him all the time?" Amanda asks, shaking her head in mock disappointment. Her curls bounce on her shoulders.
I sneak a glance at Evan. "We're friends. He has no time for you."
"Leave it, Belle," Evan orders. We walk away from the snickering girls. Evan pulls me aside when we're out of their sight and ears. "Don't bother with them. They're trying to egg you on, and they're just using me for it."
"I don't know. They're girls, Evan, who clearly have crushes on you," I mutter. "It's obvious."
"Then it's a perfect way to try and get you going, huh?" He traces his thumb over my jaw, taking me by surprise. When I stare at him, I realize he's only caressing me so I can agree with him.
I pull away and scowl. "You know I haven't and won't even try to start trouble with them. I already know it's not worth the effort."
"So are you going to do something when they insult you?"
"Yes," I reply without hesitation.
"The correct answer to that is 'no'," he says. "But I admire your lack of subtlety."
I smile, and he knows I'm not mad at him, or even upset. He leads me to the Ravenclaw tower.
"Goodnight, Belle," he says, grinning.
I reach up and kiss him on the cheek. It takes him by surprise, and I chuckle. "Goodnight, Rose."
I enter the Ravenclaw common room while he just stares behind the closed entrance.
