September
Blair and Cynthia graduated, now I am left alone with just few of my original friends.
This past summer has not been enjoyable at all. My parents have left me alone most of the time, Cynthia and Blair were off on their own separate trips, and even Evan was busy.
"I haven't seen you all summer," I complain to him when we see each other in Diagon Alley. So far, we hardly need any new supplies, but it's always good to come here anyway.
Unfortunately, because of the recent mass murders and kidnappings, the place is nearly all deserted. Some of the stores are closed down, except for the bare essentials. All young students are always accompanied with their parents or other family members. It's so sad to see the fright clear on everyone's face.
Evan has a hard line creasing his forehead as he speaks. "I know. I had things to attend to."
"You're still a child, you know," I remind him. "You shouldn't have to worry about all that Death Eater business."
"It's my job," he says in a low tone, and I know not to push it even more.
"So, where were you?" I trace my finger along the dusty windowsill of an old building. "You couldn't have been home."
"Actually, I was home, but I wasn't the only one there. We had a few guests." He looks away my from eyes. "A few families, Mulciber's, Wilkes's, Avery's, all of them and we were told a few things."
"Like...?"
"Well." He licks his dry lips. "We were told that we are coming of age soon. Also, that on the sixth of December, all four of us and our families will be going to the Malfoy Manor."
"For what? A meeting or something."
"Technically, it is a meeting, but that's not what I'm saying." His lips press together tightly. "We are to be marked then."
I gulp. So he's officially going to be a Death Eater on December sixth. I force an understanding nod. "Okay."
"You're not mad?"
"It was bound to happen."
"You don't hate me for it?"
"It's what you want." I look down at my shoes. "Although I don't understand how you could want to be something so horrible, I'm trying to keep an open mind."
He nods and I continue. "Help me out. Why do you want to be a Death Eater?"
A part of me thinks he might be scared but with one look at his powerful stance and unwavering gaze, I don't think so. He's not scared of anything. "The Dark Lord is powerful, and I want to be a part of it."
"You want that power?" I ask to clarify.
"Not exactly. I want everyone to know how powerful I am. They won't mess with me. With us." He smiles a bit and begins to intertwine our fingers. "I could convince you that it's not so bad."
"How's that?" I tease.
"There's a number of ways." He winks ominously, leaving my question unanswered.
"Like guilt-tripping me?" I suggest.
Evan wraps an arm around my shoulders. "It wouldn't work on you."
I smirk. "I know, I'm so callous."
He disagrees, but the conversation ends and we rifle through the street in search of any necessary equipment for our last year at Hogswarts.
