Jace's POV
"Jace! Jeff! Come inside now", my mum yelled from the kitchen. "Noooooo", we both yelled back. "You better come in now or I'll seize your ball Jace and your car, Jeff", she yelled again. We both groaned before grudgingly picking the ball and toy car and entering the house through the back door that leads to the kitchen. We folded our hands and frowned at our mum who just hummed cheerfully as she put the cupcakes in a tray. "Cupcakes!", Jess yelled and ran towards the dining table. My mum smacked his hand away from the cakes, "Don't touch it. They aren't for you". Jeff whined before grudgingly looking at my mum. I walked over and sat on the chair, "Who are they for mum?". "It's for the new neighbours. They just arrived", she clapped her hands happily. "Mr. Grumpy pants moved out?", Jeff asked excitedly. Mr Grumpy pants is an old guy who never passes my ball when it flies over to his fence and we have to get a new one everytime. He's always yelling at us to keep quiet even when we aren't making noise. "Yup! He's moved to stay with his children". We danced around happily. "Okay boys, go and freshen up and take these to the new neighbours". "Okay mum", we ran upstairs excitedly.
We knocked on the door twice before hearing a lady's voice from inside, "Jessica, go check who's at the door". "Okay mum!", Came another girl's voice from inside. Then the door opened and the cutest girl I've ever seen stood at the door. Her brunette hair stopped just above her shoulders and she wore a polkadot dress. She looked at us shyly before Jeff smiled and waved at her, "Hey! I'm Jeffrey and this is Jace. We're your new neighbours! Oh wait, you're our new neighbour!". She smiled sweetly before waving at both of us, "Hey I'm Jessica. Nice to meet you". Jeff laughs before giving her a fist bump, "We're all Js'. Coolllll". We both laughed at him as I finally looked away from the cute girl.
That day, after meeting Jess's parents, we played together all day long. "So how old are you?", Jeff asked Jess. "I'm 8. What of you guys?", She smiled at me. "We're 8 too!", Jeff said while playing with his toy car. "Why did you move here?", I asked her as we both tried arranging her toy blocks. "My dad's boss transferred him to the base here so we had to move", she said sadly. She sighed before speaking again, "I miss my bestfriend". I smiled at her and held her shoulder, "It's okay. I'll be your new bestfriend". She looked at me with wide eyes, "Really?". I nodded before holding her hands, "Really".
I still remember that day like it was yesterday. We became bestfriends, went to school together, ate lunch together, did everything little thing together. She would tell me of all her boy crushes and I would lie and mention random girls but I had always liked her. I never told her because I didn't want to ruin what we already have. I remember when she dated and had her first kiss with Lucas, a guy from our class. I was very angry but I couldn't show it. I tried to use that to get over her but it never worked.
Then in seventh grade, she came to lunch with Sam. Sam had just changed States and she didn't know anyone here. Blake easily blended in because he was like the cool guy, very good at football and every girl wanted to go out with the him but Sam was stuck at the sidelines. So, Jess made her start eating lunch with us and going everywhere we went. Jess tried to set me up with Sam but Sam already had her eyes on some guy in the team who I figured out to be Tyler and I wasn't really interested in her so we just became good friends.
Jess looked happy with Lucas so I never bothered to tell her about my feelings. Instead, I decided to move on. That time, I heard about Miranda's crush on me from one of her friends and she was very beautiful, cute, loving and caring so I decided to ask her out. When we started dating, things were okay. She was at every of my games yelling my name, she would brag about me to all her friends, she was there whenever I was stressed from practice, she made sure I ate healthy foods, she would do workouts with me just so I would feel motivated, we took lots of selfies and pictures together and everyone said we were picture perfect. She was the perfect girlfriend.
But my feelings for Jess kept growing and growing the more I watched her grow. She broke up with Lucas but she never told anyone why, all she said was she wasn't feeling it anymore. I was happy she was single, it meant I had a chance. But I couldn't break up with Miranda because she did nothing wrong and I can't just say I wasn't feeling it anymore because that would hurt her and no matter how much I love Jess, I would never hurt Miranda. So I tried my best to move on and be the perfect boyfriend to Miranda.
Suddenly, Jess seemed sad everytime. She was drinking alot, throwing up alot, eating less and all I wanted to do was take her in my arms, ask her what was wrong and be there for her but I couldn't. All of sudden, Miranda seemed clingy. She didn't change, she was doing everything she used to do but now I felt annoyed by everything she did and it was unfair to her but I couldn't hold my feelings for Jess anymore.
I looked down at her as she slept in her PJ's. I kept a glass of water and some aspirin on her bedside for when she wakes up because she's going to have a serious hangover. I smiled as I brushed her hair, then my phone buzzed.
Miranda: Hey J. There was a huge fight at the party between Blake, Rue, Sam and Tyler. Tyler's really hurt so Sam had to leave with him and both Rue and Blake stormed out. I can't find Jeff anywhere either. Can you come get me?
Woah! Shit, I missed a lot.
Me: I'm on my way.
I glanced at Jess one more time before walking out.
