"War is a slippery slope

Freya's POV:-
"OH HEY LOOK!! I found a huge worm!!!" Came Ell's voice from somewhere up ahead of the group but Claire who was even behind me thought it would be fun to scream like a little kid denied candy.
She was very far from where Ell was, consequently putting ideas in her head to throw the worm at her. I knew exactly how that mind of her works. She was a little like Lin.
Ella turned swiftly picking the worm on a stick I had a clear view of her. Mason was tying his shoelace a little further away sitting on a rock and maybe it was just me but did he just wink at me?
Yes, I had been mindlessly staring at him. He smirked at me too.
We all had taken a five minute break after trekking for about an hour or more. I stood leaning on a tree sideways. By now everybody was sweaty and tired of all the trek.
Soon as Ell heard Claire's screams she made it her mission to throw the worm at her. Agility that Ell caught in that moment was really funny and made me laugh at her and Claire's awaiting doom.
Too soon though.
Poking fun at Claire's situation made me miss something very crucial in that moment.
Behind me was a steep slope and infront of me was a path filled with vines, huge and too many going up the path. There stood a tree behind me however the bark was spiked.
One of Claire's friend, I think Gabriella it was who put her foot in between to make Ell fall when she was a few steps away from me.
Once she stumbled forward unable to control her speed, everything happened between seconds. She plummeted forward pushing me back in the process, my scream resonating in the valley.
One moment Mason was sitting on the rock and the next he had effectively wrapped his arm around me and turned me sideway though it still was too late. We fell on the tree sideways.
Suddenly my alertness multiplied tenfold, if his arm collided with the bark it would have definitely stabbed him. Intelligent enough to calculate that he would hurt himself yet still I couldn't calculate that if I put my palm to take the impact I'd be the one hurting myself.
We fell over it he had my whole body in his arms ready to take the full impact of the spiked bark that his clothes protected him from.
My hand immediately went numb. A minute passed I stayed cocooned in him before he finally moved taking his weight off my palm pressed to the spiked tree. Oh and did it hurt like a bitch while pulling it back.
I took my hand off the tree and immediately hid it behind me. That is exactly when I felt the sting of the tiny spikes that had pierced through skin of my palm.
He stood up picking me with him in the process putting me on my feet stably. His eyes roamed my body to check if I was hurt.
"Did you get hurt? Are you okay??" There roamed some urgency in his eyes. "Why do you always have to stand in the way of trouble." I turned my palm away from him and behind me however he needed assurance and I had to speak for that.
"Yes I am fine. Are you okay?" I tried to divert his attention but was equally concerned because he took one hell of a hit sheltering my body with his own weight added.
Thankfully he was not hurt in anyway. Though my hand stung so badly making me bite my lip from keeping it hidden. I felt something wet and knew for sure it had drawn blood from my skin.
