36- STOP BEING GULLIBLE!
"Joe, you won't believe this!" I said, immediately the video call was accepted. My close and only friend back at Beth High and the one who had gotten some information for me beforehand, about the bullies in Crystal High, laid backwards on his bed, a hand placed at the back of his head.
"What's up, Sam!" Then he squinted. "Woah, is that your car?" I grinned, despite myself.
"Yeah. My dad handed me the keys some weeks back." I said.
"Wow, that's great." He knew all about my dad and how I didn't like to discuss him, so he didn't press. "And I'm just getting to know about this?" He feigned hurt. I rolled my eyes but apologized nevertheless.
"It's not okay, but okay." Joe said. I scoffed.
"Back to the issue! You wouldn't believe who also goes to Crystal High!"
"Carlos." Joe smiled sadly. I blinked. Then blinked again.
"Wait. Hold up! You knew?!" Joe flinched at the pitch of my voice.
"Sam, calm down. I can explain." He said, sitting up, his eyes wide.
"Oh you better start!" I glared. Joe cleared his throat, scratching the back of his head.
"To be fair, I didn't actually know Carlos attended Crystal High until you were enrolled. Heck, I discovered three weeks ago."
"What?! Three weeks Joe! Three weeks! You couldn't even have given me a heads up or something?" I frowned, clearly hurt.
"No, no! I had discovered accidentally. I had a cause to scroll through your school's website and I saw some pictures back when he was in eleventh grade." Joe sighed. "Honestly, I thought you would have known. And I know how touchy that topic is for you." I bit my lower lip as I sighed.
"Last week, however, I found his name among the students who took classes online. Then I did some findings on his social media platforms and discovered he moved to Brazil with his mum some months back." I nodded. Carlos had always been fond of his mother whom I had met a couple of times. "They had stayed there for the holidays. I guess his father requested for him to head back to Portland to attend classes personally and complete high school." I groaned. I would have known this if I hadn't unfollowed him and if his accounts weren't private. Yeah, I had searched him up a few times... To see if he turned out miserable!
I don't think I would ever be able to get over my bitterness towards Carlos. He deserved every evil that came his way, if they even came! I groaned.
"I was shocked. Caught off guard. I literally ran off when I saw him." Joe gave me a brief sad smile. He knew how much I disliked being pitied.
"You'd be fine." He tried to assure me. "Just know if you need any help, I'm always here."
"Thanks." I mumbled. Though there was basically almost nothing he could do to help than give me information, I appreciated his concern. Joe had seen me through my worst, especially when I broke up with Carlos. Joe was always there! That priceless friend!
"Hey, hey. Cheer up, Sam!" Joe sang. "I should probably pay Portland a visit during Christmas." My eyes lit up.
"For real?"
"Yeah! My grandparents have a house in Northeast Portland which some of my cousins live in." Ugh! My shoulders sagged. I had hoped it was in downtown Portland.
"That's a long time! Just make sure you come over to downtown. You need to see the house my dad got us!" Then I sighed. "I miss you, Joe."
"I miss you more." Joe sighed just as I fought the tears threatening to spill. My life was in Boise.
