JUNGKOOK POV
I'm in a field of poppies, soft music playing. I hum to the beat looking up. The sky looks so ethereal, flashes of orange and pink across. I could stay here forever.
"What are you listening to?" A voice disrupts the peaceful air.
I look at her face, smiling. "You can't hear it?"
"You know, Jeon, I think you're slowly going insane," she chuckles. "Come here," I gesture her to lie down with me.
Before she can the ground opens up into black abyss, a demonic figure pulling her in. I try reaching for her but my legs become stuck. My voice falters as I fail to scream out for her, helplessly watching her fall into nothingness. As soon as the ground closes again, I find my voice once more and scream with all my might...
Beep beep beep.
"Woah!" I sit up from my bed with a jolt. I groan, looking at my alarm clock.
10:30.
I swing my legs over my bed and get up to change, not wanting to think about the semi-nightmare I just had. As I pull my shirt over my head, I look across at Kang's window. She's still sleeping? Usually by now she'd be awake earlier than me.
I walk downstairs and see my mom making breakfast. "Morning, Jungkook. Where are you going today?"
I smile at her, taking the cereal from the cupboard. "Just the cinema. I was thinking horror since she's a wuss," I laugh.
"Now now Kookie, be nice," she side-eyes me.
I roll my eyes but kiss her cheek anyways. "Okay, gotta go bye mom!" I leave the house, emptying the cereal box contents into my mouth as I walk over to her house.
"Get up, Kang! It's D-3!" I pound on the door. Kimchi starts barking, wagging her tail as she looks at me through the window. I try my luck and push open the door, seeing it unlocked. I smile as she comes up to me, pushing her head against my leg. I pet her softly, shaking my head.
"That girl is one lazy piece of shit, isn't she, Kimchi?" I mimick a child's voice squishing her face.
I walk up the stairs, looking around the corridor. It hits me how different this house is from mine, while my stairway is lined with family portraits hers are just film photos of her friends and dog. I spot one family portrait right at the end as I reach upstairs. Her mother holding her as a baby, father looking over happily. It's hard to believe they were once happy like this.
I knock on her door softly, pushing open and still seeing her asleep. "Woman, you are fucking deaf," I sigh.
I take a star-shaped pillow on her window sill and begin repeatedly hitting her with it. She finally stirs awake slightly, opening one eye at me.
"The hell, Jeon..." she complains. It's amusing how low her voice is in the morning, being the only girl I know that has terrible morning voice.
"Get up! Dr Jeon Fun Timez is here!" I say, still hitting her.
"Hey, Jeon?" she says softly. I slow down my movements, realising something wrong.
"Is it okay if we take a raincheck today? I-I don't feel—"
I get a better look at her face realising her hair's stuck to her forehead all sweaty, her porcelain skin now tinted unnaturally red.
"Damn, Kang. What the hell happened?" I say reaching to feel her forehead. I retract my hand like lightning as soon as she blows a loud sneeze.
"Okay, raincheck!" I exclaim loudly, startled by her sudden sickness. The sudden sound of footsteps downstairs catches my attention. She hears it too, looking at me. "Did you invite someone over?"
I shake my head. "Kook!" a feminine voice calls.
I groan in frustration, but more irritated as to why she let herself into Kang's house. "Who's that?" Kang whispers.
"N-no—"
The room door swings open as Chohee walks in, Kimchi barking at her. "Can you tell this dog to shut up? It's been barking at me since I came in," she complains.
"Maybe because you're an intruder?" Kang muses. "Just who the fuck are you and why are you in my home?"
A sudden wave of realisation hits her, looking guilty. "I-I'm sorry, I'm Chohee. Kook your mom said you were here so I came."
"Not today, Cho. I'm busy as you can see," I gesture to Kang on the bed, who looks more uncomfortable with each passing second.
"You can't just walk into someone else's house like that, are you fucking nuts?" I get mad.
Her eyes nearly water over and I feel bad, remembering her condition. "S-sorry, I-I didn't mean to—"
"Actually Kook why don't you go with her instead?"
I stare at Byeol now, eyes wide. "Huh?"
"Dr Jeon FunTimez can take another patient today, hm?" she laughs weakly.
My shoulders droop as I see her beckoning gaze. "Y-you're really okay with it?" I ask her softly.
She shrugs, coughing a little. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"
I flinch at her statement. I start to feel pissed off trying to mask my disappointment. I just thought...
"Fine. Feel better, Kang," I don't spare her another glance and take Chohee's hand petting myself out.
I feel a pang of guilt for leaving her like that, but I'm too bothered by her words to care. I sit down in the theatre, angrily eating my popcorn. "Slow down, Kook. You won't have enough once the movie starts," she laughs. I grow annoyed easily. If Kang were here she'd compete with me for it.
As the movie plays out she latches onto my arm the whole time, but my mind is somewhere else. "Are you alright, Kook?" Chohee asks feeling my detachment. I look down at her and attempt to smile.
