5: What the hell

The whole team, minus Jay and Mouse walk back into the bullpen after meeting with our CI's. What we find is surprising, Jay straddling Mouse's lap in a desk chair. Hailey and Kim to the normal girly 'awe' while Hank, Kevin, Alvin, Antonio and I are asking 'what the hell?' Voight opens his mouth to yell at the pair but Mouse stops him.

"The girl from the bombing that died yesterday was Jay's childhood best friend." Mouse tells us

"So should I be worried about my detective not having his head on straight?" Voight asks

All of our eyes are on Jay and how quiet he is right now. Mouse shifts a little and runs a hand up and down Jay's back.

"Yeah, you should." Mouse responds

"Halstead my office." Voight says gentler than he ever has

Jay makes a noise similar to a hurt animal, but nonetheless gets up off Mouse's lap. He keeps his head down as he walks to Voight's office.

Jay keeps his head down as he walks to my office. Once inside, I shut the door, lock it, and shut the blinds, effectively shutting out the rest of the team.

"This is the second time you've been late this week, what's going on?" I ask

"N-nothing da- sir." Jay whispers

Did he almost call me daddy? I'm just gonna drop that for now and get back to the point.

"I'm sorry about your friend, and if staying here with Mouse is what you need to do for a few days, then I'm gonna allow it, but if there's anything else going on, I need to be the first to know." I explain

I take a closer look at the kid, he looks smaller than he did a few months ago, and come to think of it, I never really see him eat.

"C-can I stay in with Mouse for the next few days?" Jay ask in a small voice

Wait, small voice, what the hell is going on here? Again gonna drop it until it comes out on its own.

"Yeah, now come here." I say and pull my youngest detective into my arms

Yep, tinier than the last time I hugged him.

Jay walks out of my office and goes back to his spot on Mouse's lap. I smile, maybe those two can get together and figure this out.
