"I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you are not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again."
- F. Scott Fitzgerald❆ ❆ ➳ ❆ ❆
The sun set over the horizon, reflecting off of the bright blue ocean. The tide was low and the waves were few, creating the perfect environment for swimming and hunting for seashells.
Andie watched from a distance as the Pevensies relaxed on the beach. Peter and Susan spread their legs out in front of them in the sand, leaning back on their hands. Edmund and Lucy seemed to be hunting for crabs and seashells, intermittently splashing each other with foamy seawater as they combed the shore.
A smile crept onto Andie's face as she watched them playing and laughing together. The past few days had been rough; she would have been surprised if they weren't the least bit traumatized by the battle.
It had taken days to reach Cair Paravel but they had finally arrived earlier that day. They could finally let their worries go and relax. The weight of battle had been taken off their shoulders and, for just a moment, they could be children again.
"They'll be great leaders," Jack spoke from beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders to pull her closer. She rested her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes for just a moment to enjoy the sounds of the ocean and to feel the sea breeze against her face.
Andie heard the sound of heavy paws padding towards them and turned to see Aslan heading their way. They bowed as he approached them, sinking to their knees and letting their heads hang low.
"Rise, dear ones," he spoke softly, a hint of a chuckle in his tone as though it was an amusing sight, "You have both had quite the journey."
The two remained silent, unsure of what to say. There were so many unanswered questions, Andie wasn't sure where to start.
Aslan spoke again, making the decision for them. "You have both done well," he said, "Your strength and bravery have not gone unnoticed. Your father would be proud."
Jack bowed his head as if still ashamed of his previous actions. He and Aslan had talked privately but, much like Edmund, the conversation was one that remained between the two of them.
After a moment, Jack spoke, asking the question that had been on Andie's mind since the end of the battle. "Please, Aslan," he said, "Could you tell us what happened the night of the attack?"
The Lion sighed as if the memory was not one he wanted to recall. "Your father was deceived by the Witch. She used her magic to take advantage of him, to reach the darkest parts of his soul and bring them out. She promised to make him King, to give him everything he wanted. In return, he was tasked with giving Jack an apple from the Tree of Life."
"But why did she want me to have it?"
"She wanted your power, dear one. She wanted to steal your power and take you as her servant. She never wanted your father. He was merely a pawn that she used to get what she wanted."
