Jack leaned against the base of the tree, letting his head hang forward as his eyelids drooped. His hood was pulled up, casting a dark shadow over his face.
Once upon a time, he might have taken his job seriously. In fact, during his first few years, he'd practically been a machine. He would patrol the woods each and every day, one hand always resting on the hilt of his dagger, never once letting his guard down. He wouldn't have hesitated to capture a human and hand them over to the Witch.
Fortunately for him - and unfortunately for the Witch - he'd begun to realize his dedication to the job was unnecessary. During his one hundred years of patrolling the forest, not a single human had ever passed through. He was certain that was not going to change while he slept.
Besides, it was almost time for him to turn in for the night anyway.
He figured a quick nap couldn't hurt, as he hardly slept while he was in the palace. Sleeping on the dungeon floor proved to be a rather uncomfortable experience.
A hundred years of service for the Witch and she couldn't be bothered to provide him with a bed and some decent food. Jack wasn't even sure why she bothered to let him come back at night.
Perhaps it was to make sure he hadn't wandered off and betrayed her.
He wouldn't dream of it.
He wondered why she let him patrol the woods at all. Surely her pack of wolves would do a much better job. They didn't even patrol at night - lazy beasts. But that meant good fortune for any human who might stumble in at night. It was almost guaranteed they wouldn't get caught - much similar to the daytime.
Jack slid down the base of the tree, plopping down into the soft snow beneath him.
His slumber was brief, however, as a rustling sound caused him to jump to his feet, ready to freeze anyone who stepped in his path. Jack couldn't actually freeze someone in a solid block of ice - which would have been an extremely useful trait - but he never let on to anyone that his powers were actually less than he made them out to be.
His bravado was all an act, but he never once broke character.
Quickly crouching behind a shrub, Jack readied himself for whatever was coming towards him. The crunching of the snow grew louder, signaling that whoever was out there was getting closer. Closer....closer....closer still.
